What do the Abbreviations Mean?

Letterboxers love their abbreviations! It shortens the clue, adds another layer of cryptography and helps create their own language for their meets – but this can be difficult for those new to the hobby to know what’s going on!

Thanks to forum member, Number 70, and his post here Рwhich has been added to by others in the forum, we have a list of abbreviations that might help


Relating to specific locations…

    • GLT – Great Links Tor
    • LMT – Little Mis Tor
    • GST Great Staple Tor
    • MST – Middle Staple Tor
    • LST – little Staple Tor

…etc – use common sense when at location!


Direction ones with or without the backslash

  • N/E – North East
  • S/E – South East
  • N/W – North West
  • S/W -South West

Relating to the owner;

  • ND – Norfolk Dumplings
  • P&V – Pat & Viv Clatworthy (Jude the Obscure)
  • WW – Woodstock Wanderers

  • GCR or PGCR – part grass covered rock
  • hgpt – high (est) point
  • HP – highest point of a tor
  • JV – Just Visible
  • LH or LHS – Left Hand Side
  • LG – Large
  • MCR or PMCR – Moss Covered Rock (Part)
  • MP – Mail Post
  • MS – Milestone
  • OP – Observation Post (on the North moor)
  • o/h – overhanging
  • p – Paces
  • PB – Peat Bank
  • PV / PVCR – Part Veg Covered Rock
  • PWCR or PHCR – part – whortle or heather – covered rock
  • RH or RHS – Right Hand Side
  • RNB – Range Notice Board
  • RP – Range Pole
  • S/L – Skyline
  • sl.b – sloping boulder
  • SM – Small
  • T&F – Tare & Feather
