Have the stamp - but what's the box number?

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right forum, as I have the stamp but not the box number! When I collect a stamp I record the date, location (grid ref), and the official box number. Sometimes I come across a stamp which is either very new or very old, and no longer in the catalogue. Hence I can't look up the box number.

First:

Anyone have the box number for "Bear-ing's No 5"? The stamp is just a small Panda bear. Whiteworks area, and stamped on 3-7-04 (!). My notes says that there was supposed to be a bonus stamp nearby, but I couldn't find it.

Second:

Box number for "Dartmoor Plantations - South Common"? The stamp is triangular with a picture of a woodland in the middle. The title part of the stamp says "South Common 558 807". Box was near Lynch Tor, and stamped on 9-7-05. There is a current "Dartmoor Plantations" series, but it does not include this stamp.

Thanks,

John.

Hi John,

I have found the same box (Beari-ings No5). Unfortunately I do not have the number either. Never been to Lynch Tor so have not found the other one for certain.

I have looked back in the catalogues and it is not listed (at least in the summer books, including deletions) I'm afraid.

Sorry mate :?

Ah, well, that's the problem. A note in my book says that it was my dog that found this one :) I vaguely remember the day, and I was more interested in the area than actually letterboxing, so it is quite possible to have found it by chance. The problem is that it is not possible to tell (just from the box) if a box is listed or not (WOM), although some of the older ones used to include their registered box number in the visitors book.

we had the same problem out on the moor, so decided to put it on our wom walk on the pots with our stamps in saying it was a wom box, just think it would be easier if it was on all boxes if it was a wom, catalogue or junk box

How have you managed to train it to do that - we have four dogs and if we could train them then it would boost our total!!

No, no training. However, when he picks up a scent he tends to sniff much more than when just scouting around. Since a letterbox usually contains a lot of smells, he tends to have a good sniff as if it were a rabbit hole. So if I keep an eye on him, and notice him being particularly interested in something then I take a peek :) He's found a few letterboxes like this.
