what sighting compass ???

ok ive got a garmin geko201 and it does the job and yes some say its cheating but i want to get a sighting compass apart from the silva 54 is there any cheaper compasses out there??.
ive got a silva type15t(the ranger) but havent got a clue on how to use it.
Any help please.

I would recommend the Silva 54, I also had a very simular compass to the Silva 15 but the 54 is much better for sighting.

I've got the Silva 54 as well and have got much better at finding and placing stamps with it. A great compass.

I'm not aware of any product comparable to the Silva Expedition 54. In terms of accuracy and convenience it seems purpose-built for letterboxing.

As an alternative, you perhaps could consider a mirrored compass instead. The Suunto MCA-D is an option. Suunto are a reputable brand, the MCA-D is their top-of-the-range compass, and its priced around £28-£34.

Silva manufacture an equivalent model. Called the Ranger S, its priced £27-£35 online.

Do your research though. Cheap small sighting compasses are fine for orienteering, treks or emergencies. They tend to be small and fiddly though and not to be suitable for precision bearings on the Moor. Also, with no roamer scales or transparent base plate - not great for plotting routes either.
