Well done Monkey's on the Moor & also Rich, it won't be long before the two of you reach the magic 100!

It's amazing when you first start letterboxing with the numbers game. You can't wait to get to 10, 200, 500 then the big 1000!

I've just reached 2521 stamps so now I've got to the stage where the numbers are not so important, more the walk, the open space and the added benefit of finding some boxes along the way.

I wish you all the best in your next 1 or 2 trips and then you will be sending off for your membership and first cloth badge!

Have fun,

Well done Monkeys and Rich - I think after todays haul that I am just 13 away from 500 - the numbers game is still important to me! Just like being back at school with sew on badges as rewards!

Having plugged away on my days off, I'm up to 50 - I'd like to get my 100 badge earned by the time winter approaches.

I've probably been slowed down by the fact that I do geocaching at the same time as letterboxing, but I'm thoroughly enjoying my days up on the moor. :)

Cheers,

Z.

I have got the 2000 badge, plus all the other one's stitched onto my old rucksack. They do go as high as you want them, I've seen one made for 20,000 before!

so if they go that high how come sometime when you go letterboxing you find none and some dayd you find loads, does anyone know how many stamps there realy are on the moors?

Dizzy

Now one really knows how many stamps there are on the moors. Some say around 10,000 registered boxes. But also bearing in mind that there are hundreds of Word of Mouth boxes, plus non registered boxes al over the moors, so your guess is as good as mine.

I don't always find many when I go out where as some days I can come home with 30 or so, it all depends where you go on the day and how good you search. You may for example walk on the wrong side of a rock that contains a letterbox, or some boxes are so well hidden you would need to be looking for it with clues.

I went to Yar Tor on Thursday and found absolutely loads. I wish I'd had more time. I got 15 in the space of a few hours. I'll probably go back next week and finish the job off. It's the first place where I had a few almost jump out at me - i.e. I'd find one or two whilst looking for others.

It's a nice view from up there too. :)

Oh I need to get back out there again

As a beginner, I have to say only ONE number is important to me: reaching 100!
Why? Well, then I can buy the book of clues.

I have three children and I more often than not take them with me. The problem is to keep their motivation high, with them finding a box being the best solution.

As a result, the precious few times I do get to the moor on my own I'm running around like a crazed hare, trying to find boxes, so the next time I'm out there with my kids I can steer them towards a box or two and they have the pleasure of having "found" it!

Slow going, though - I only have 31 so far! Do stamps collected at the meet count? And if so, how many can a newcomer collect at his first meet?

Regards,

William

PS: Nano = EXTREMELY small, almost nothing, so NanoRuler = ruler of almost nothing, just in case you wondered!

(I have three children and I more often than not take them with me. The problem is to keep their motivation high, with them finding a box being the best solution.)

I was n this position some years ago and actually I found that they had much more fun running around and scavenging for boxes than following up clues; many of which from the clue book are sadly no longer there in any case! Just let them rip, mine just loved finding more boxes than me!

When my two were young they enjoyed scavanging around as well. We did try a few clues from charity walks, but apart from this it was always scavenging. They loved it for a couple of years.

Welcome to the site and enjoy your first meet. You can get quite a few stamps at the meet but you can also purchase some charity walks, which will help towards the 100.

Enjoy.

Hello Nanoruler!

Welcome from us also! As Fulchet says, you can pick up many stamps at the 'meet'. (Not speaking from experience though as we haven't been to one yet! )

Reading elsewhere on this forum, I think it was Nik-KOTM who said that he knew of someone who collected 500 stamps at a meet! (I'm sure someone will correct me if I have not recalled correctly!)

Best wishes

Thanks for the welcome!

I also read that bit about the 500 stamps, but surely that's cheating?

Despite the enjoyment of scavenging, I really want my kids to remain excited, hence me looking for clues. The idea is that I'll do the clue part and then steer them into targeted areas, whereafter it's up to them.

My 8-year old found one without any help on Monday just on Princetown's side of Merrivale, and her little face just lit up (normally it's her older brother that finds them, much to her annoyance).

Of course then my 4-year old simply HAD to find a box and I had to help her out quite a bit!

As a family man, I love spending time with my children, and I love being out on the moor. This way I get to do both!

Now if only I can convince my wife to come along....
