Hi all,
I'm not a letterboxer as such but have been under dartmoor's spell for many years!
I would appreciate any help with the following itch: I've been trying to find the site of a Fairey Battle crash on Lower White for ages and this has been the subject of a dozen runs so far this year but no joy. Tim Sandles' excellent site 'Dartmoor Mystery and History' says there is a letterbox placed off it, so i reckoned if i could find that, then i knew i'd be in the right area.
I appreciate that you don't know me from adam and there are idiots who chose to destroy boxes, but any help would be appreciated!

PS I'm the same Paul Fox making this plea in the visitors' book on tim's site.

Jeez - that is going back some time innit? I have vague recollections about the site - no I wasn't barn when it happened - but I think somewhere in my meagre collection of books I have some info about it - somewhere - probably in Plymouth... come to think of it there were quite a few "forced landings" on the moor due to the wonderful Dartmoor weather....

There are quite a few sites listed on Tim's site but this and another near tavy hole elude me. Still, the thrill of the hunt.....

S'pose i'm a letterboxer at heart (I've found a few by accident while stopping for a drink) but being a runner isn't ideal.

Thanks for your time and efforts so far

Take care on the moor

Paul

While we are talking about hunting for things, does anyone know where any vermin traps are on the moor, I have been told there are about 40 on the moor in areas such as Legis Tor, Trowlesworthy Tor etc. If anyone knows where one is please could they let me know? I will need bearings or GPS reference.

Thanks KOTM.

nice to join in such a friendly forum.

I'm out running with my dog most weekends (and some evenings, but unless you have a crack night hunting squad, you won't see me then)

Hope to bump into members on the moor.

Thanks for the invite to chip in as an when.

Take care all

Paul

PS

I usually wear black kit and my dog (a big collie) is usually up to his eyeballs in mud and will try to snaffle the contents of your lunchbox!
I may have run close to some forum members last Sunday near Littaford...

Brinnie,

Sorry these aren't GPS bearings but they were taken before such an invention.

Trowlesworthy Vermin Traps
SX 5790 6425 - 170p west of Trowlesworthy Tor
SX 5770 6490 - LHS of Spanish Lake, 550p above weir
SX 56606510 - 120P SW of Shadyback Tor

Legis Tor Vermin Traps
SX 5720 6555 - S of main outcrop
SX 5700 6530 - Below Legis Tor, next to wall of pound
SX 5700 6560 - In clitter against NW outcrop of Legis Tor

These are but a very few of the traps in the area but if you want more let me know.

Hi
The place to look for the battle is in a backgarden in barton torquay, the remains of the aircraft were recovered by the DARRT in the late 70's and is in their collection for eventual display.
I think the biggest piece recovered was one of the wings.

Welcome to the site Brewerjerry :)
Tell me... are you glad you emigrated or are you missing Dartmoor like some of us on here (namely ...ME!)

Any input from you will be greatly appreciated as the winter months seem to have slowed a lot of things down on here... now the first meet of the year is rapidly approaching things should pick up soon

Hi Brewerjerry,

Thanks for the info!

Any idea who I could contact to find out more, particularly re. the location (Lower White is surprisingly big when looking for a crash site!)
