Hi we are complete novices, and have a 3 year old, I was wondering if there were a few easy boxes to find just to ease us in gently, (other than pubs, shops etc)

We failed to find grenofen viaduct box, but had hours of great fun and frustration trying.

any suggestions gratefully welcomed.

If you have a wander around Pew Tor, this should keep you busy for hours and with lots of success. Good luck.

If you can get over to the East of the moor near to Hay Tor, then the Saddle Tor area is noted for being a 'starter' area for toddlers; had a happy afternoon there with my young Niece who loved the whole idea! Recommended.

Hi Hunting Owles - welcome to the site ... tis nice to see a new face in here... I hope you will find loads of info around this site we are all willing to help if you need it

Around Bonehill Rocks is a good place for beginners too.

Though with 3 year olds you need to keep a very tight rein on them without them realising you are doing it.

I hope you have read some of the other posts in the notices and links section and the compass bits on Navigation.

But happy hunting and I hope you both reach your hundred before the spring meet

you could always try a charity walk i think most are still out and about, have a look on the charity walks on here. but pew tor is very good for beginers like tina said. also widgery cross have a fair few. If you go into the national trust place at princetown they have books and the people in there are very helpfull as they did letterboxing think they still do.

Talking of Widgery Cross, where to people park/have you got the gps?

Thanks

we parked at the fox and hound carpark well the churches carpark next to it. then just down the track. at lydford. there is a nice warm fire in the pub for the end of the walk and they dont mind dirty boots.

Welcome New Comers!

Tina, when going to Brat Tor I park in the carpark actually on the Moors - there is a turning right beside The Dartmoor Inn - which takes you up a rough track, through a gate which needs opening and then up onto the edge of the Moors with a fairly large parking area. May see you there some time.

Hi, Hunting Owles
Welcome to the site and the highly addictive hobby of letterboxing.

Although Saddle Tor has been suggested, there have been problems with letterboxes there being destroyed/taken/left in the open. You may have seen on this forum comments about 'Letterbox Thieves' - no-one knows who they are or why they do it, but they spoil the fun for us dedicated lot.

Wherever you go, please ensure that any boxes you find are properly sealed afterwards and hidden from casual eyes.

Wishing you all success in your searches :D

May see you on the moors sometime.

Regards,
Generation Gap

Thanks Crafty Jo - that will save my little legs a bit.

I've parked here too. As I was not sure whether the car park was private I asked at the pub whether it was OK for me to park while I went on the Moor. They said it would be no problem, but suggested we popped in for a pint before leaving. No problem complying with that! A pub worth a visit in any case, and a warm welcome.

Great, thanks for so many suggestions, we started on Pew tor, and had a great time, found 14 boxes which we sealed up well afterwards. don't worry we never go on the moor without compass, wet gear and emergency supplies etc, we may be new to letterboxing, but not to hill walking.
Iwe hope to see some of you out there sometime soon.

Letterboxing is like Marmite - you either love it or hate it there is no inbetween. And the more you dig into letterboxing the more fascinating the moors become.
Dartmoor has such a rich history you would never reach the bottom of it.
Dartmoor has such a wide array of flora and fauna you could spend a life time seeking it out (Though most of it seems to be heather, gorse, whorlteberry and windswept trees).
Dartmoor has such a huge appeal....... I could go on for hours here...

I agree. Dartmoor has got so much to offer.

Just started out letterboxing and loving it! Got all my gear now and have quite a few stamps - talking to an established letterboxer, they said i need to record more than just the stamp when i get to the box (grid ref/gps & box name etc). Currently I just have a page with the tor name and date, with the stamps I have found printed on to it - is this no good??? :?

Hi Steph & Chris, to be honest with you everyone records their information differently when finding a box. We tend to make a note of any damage to a box, record the name of the stamp, stamp number (if registered) place and date found.
