Windy on the Moors

I was on the south side of Pew Tor this afternoon for about an hour. It was windy but not as bad as I thought it would be.

I walked up to Gibbet Trig this afternoon from Brentor, it was windy on top but a lot warmer than this morning.

I was up by Devils Bridge (Princetown) at around lunchtime, and, yup, it was windy :) Not as windy as it has been though; probably about 30MPH gusts (on Middle Hill). My car temperature sensor said it was about 11-12C, so it felt mild. I was looking for (and found) the 'Dartmoor oddity' mentioned in the latest Dartmoor News.
I then went to Burrator - picked up an easy letterbox. No wind, but I was sheltered most of the time.
This evening (6-6:30pm) I was on Roborough Moor (edge of Dartmoor near Plymouth) just walking my dog, and there was no wind as such, but it was definitely colder (7C). Clouds to the West looked ominous too!

I have a week of work, so at least I've been out a little bit :)

Gridref SX 5825 7305. Near to Devils bridge.

Advice: approach the site from the North/North-East. I went straight from Devils Bridge, and it's a little wet and awkward :(

If you follow the ruined wall (running south-west/north-east), at the gridref you will come to a largish boulder set in the wall (near to the tree with the birdsnest in it; if you look closely at the OS map you will see that the wall has a very small square 'building' next to it (by the 400m contour); follow the wall further south-west to the object which is on the other side of the wall).

On its west side the boulder has what looks like some sort of old iron 'tag' set in it. It's only a few inches high and wide, and fairly thin. There seems to be the remains of a broken one a foot or so away on the same rock. Probably something to do with the tinning works, but what exactly the object is is unknown (to me certainly, and to the author of the original article).

Cheers John,

I'll look for it next time I'm out that way.

Since I'm using an ISP I thought I might as well use the web pages they give me :)

A couple of pictures of the oddity can be seen here: http://homepages.tesco.net/jhorne/dartmoor/index.htm

Weird looking thing.

I haven't seen anything similar on the moor.
