I was there early in the morning and left about 10:30 so I could try to do a walk - instead of coming back to the meet which was my intention I ran out of time and had to go back to work.

Me although we met at the Autumn Meet last year, arrived 11 and 12 and stayed for a few hours, put a few more faces to the names and picked up several walks, we attempted one the Bygone Devon. A word of warning

Bygone Devon. A word of warning more an observation having attaempted the first four.

All boxes appear to be on hardboard backings so if you find one around box two refering to the local leat (grimstone and sortridge) on white plastic and circular its not box 2 or its pirate box.

The third in the series is catching everyone out apparently, ignore the first leat and move up to the next one, up the hill slightly. Spent twenty minutes walking around a very large gorse bush about 20-30m from the leat at Feather tor while the other half took some nice photos, the bearings where just scraping in correctly. this lady in red popped up waving her hands in the right direction and two other boxers at the correct location who we helped where doing likewise motions.

I couldn't get to the meet until 4:00. Definitely going to get there a lot earlier next time.

I am beginning to think some of these "charity walks" are a bit over priced these days - I saw one there for £3.50 and walked well away from it - Oh how I wish it was back in Princetown - there seems to be a lot of rubbish for sale at the meets due to the lack of space.
I also noticed the price of food had gone up considerably too.

the rotary club was two pound just for one clue, i hope the stamp is going to be good other wise if they sell them again I think we might miss them out.

I agree with you there Nik. The price of these walks is getting a little on the heavy side. A tenner gone just to get four walks in. I just hope that a huge chunk gets to the right places.
There was one particular 'charity' I did question myself over, I will not mention it on here. But it did not seem very charitable in my eyes, and the explanation was no better when I enquired. That said ... I did purchase it.

£2 for one clue?
I purchased a walk some years ago in aid of CLIC. I think it cost £1 and you got one clue, the clue for box 1. The clue for box 2 was in the back of the book in box 1 etc etc. However, I never managed to find the first box.
Typical

The majority are worthy causes though and we do have the choice as to whether to purchase them or not.

I must admit, I don't really like Lee Moor and much preferred the couple of meets that I attended at Princetown in the 1990s.

Hello, not going to add to the 'A' debate here but would like, as a new letterboxer, to add my two pennyworth in with respect to the cost of the charity walks at the Spring meet (our first ever). Personally speaking I think the prices more than reasonable. When you think about the effort that individuals (or groups) go to to pull these things together, cost of stamps and personal time along with the many, many hours of enjoyment you get for between £2.00 and £3.50 then I think people are actually getting good value for money.

Please feel free to shoot me if you think I am wrong :)

Now to the meet itself, hubby and I, never having been to one before, given we only discovered the World of Letterboxing in February, were debating how many people we thought would attend. Hubby's guess was 25 people whilst I, being a bit of a pessimist as far as these things go, thought there would be me, hubby and perhaps two others wandering around an empty hall

Well how wrong were we! Next time we will have to get there earlier to save ourselves a long walk into the village

BANG!

It wasn't that long ago where the price was only a £1. This meet was the most expensive I have ever seen the charity walks, I don't mind giving to charity but what I object to is the ever increasing cost. I would bet this autumn the price will top £4 a walk if not £5. And sadly more and more tables are being given over to charity walks. It is sad to say - but I actually have more fun the night before. And having said that it is also a shame the current owners of the Plume of Feathers were so ignorant about letterboxing - otherwise we would have been in there or the Railway Inn. In fact , come to think of it, I have not set foot back in either pub since that "last night"

The Searchlighters

Clearly lots of "history" that, being new, we are not aware of would love to know the gossip behind why we do not meet at the pubs mentioned - if it's printable! Guess we will both have to respect our differing views on the price of the walks

i still think 2 pound for one clue is very dear, thankfully they have been re-briefed.

Nik - KOTM

The reason why the pre-meet is held elsewhere to the Plume and Railway - essentially is because we are banned!

On the eve of the first meet at Lee Moor we descended upon Princetown and were kept waiting on a Saturday night by the new owners of the Plume (who also own the Railway) the doors didn't open until 6:20 pm (so much for all day drinking!!!). They were absolutely oblivious to us coming there they didn't even have a clue as to what letterboxing was all about.
So instead of being prepared for us, they had booked some miniscule party in the back room

There was little food available to those who wanted it, but we had a good time anyway. However the same cannot be said about the pool table. The table was brand new (having only been delivered a few days before) and some bright spark managed to cover the table in INK!!! The proprieters were not happy about that.

So the following pre-meet it was arranged for us to go to the Cornall instead, where we get HUUUUUUUUUUUGE meals at a very reasonable price, and since then we have stayed put!

Who knows - one day we shall return - as the Plume has a huge room (as mentioned) at the back which is brillaint for the get together
