It only takes a few seconds to log on, so why not log on and leave a message on any of the threads, it always seems to be the same people logging on and leaving messages, so come on letterboxers put you fingers into use and put some imput on the forum........

What amazes is when you see how many times a topic has been 'viewed' compared to how many 'replies' it has.

to me only seems 4 or 5 people write on the forum everyone else can not be bothered

I know what you mean. 278 registered users and just a handful of regular contributors.

278 members may seem a lot but it is not. Their are some forums with 1000s of members. Just think how many probably joined up to see what it was all about and will never post.
Some people won't post if there knowledge is minimal about the subject and feel they may be made to look small, these people will soon get to know this won't happen.

The way I see it is those who post build a good rapor with others. This in time will encourage more to join in yada yada :D

Well said kk.

The forum welcomes all (even me!) which is why I enjoy posting a bit of banter every now and again.

I know that 268 members is not much in relative terms.

Let me put something else into the pot. On the forum home page it says "Most users ever online was 67 on Tue Nov 20, 2007 8:40 pm" this surprises me as nowadays it is rare if there are 10 active users at any one time. With more people registering every week I would have thought that active figures would get near this figure. Will have to see what happens this November I suppose

We had this discussion on one of the other forums with so many "people" who actually come online at once - the majority of them are computers trying to leave rubbish on the websites Spiderbots I think they are called.

Sadly for us some of them are trying to leave child pornography, but most of them are now squashed by governments. Though there are one or two getting through to leave links - the down side was because of the porn we had to have a code entered for each post - really annoying! Oh there are a few people who sit there who are terrified to type in something - don't know why though but one day they will and then realise that we dont bite and we are actually a friendly lot.

I am amazed that the thread "spot the pic" has had over 4000 hits in 6 weeks here but much less replys. It does show that there is some interest in those that just want to browse the site and not comment further. I have a picture site and the same thing happens there. You put a picture up to be commented on and all look and no comments appear.

I do think its good to click on this site and read the latest gos, so we should be glad that some of us are here to post the gos for others to read.

BTW....still not bought the GPS yet, still unsure of which to buy,,,willl make the plunge on a wing and a prayer one day

That makes sense now, nice job keeping them at bay lol.

That's what amazes me as well, the 'view' to 'reply' ratio.

I recently bought the 'etrex H' and can't fault it.

Have been a member since December 2007 but am still new to this type of forum (especially for leaving messages). You all sound friendly, helpful and most of you know what to write about or how to reply to the topic.

My husband and I have been letterboxing for a few years but by the sound of it we are not so dedicated as some of you.

We are hoping to pop up this weekend and do a couple of the charity walks around Widgery Cross not sure yet but we may stay overnight as well and make a weekend of it (depends on what the weather is also).

Maybe we will pop into some of you on the moors one of these days, but sometimes were we are boxing there does not seem to many others around.

I do like logging on and looking at all the topics and will try in the future to leave a message.

Depends on the forum - the climbing forum I post on has *43000* registered users (not counting past accounts deleted due to inactivity) and, when I checked a moment ago, had 292 registered users online plus another 63 guests. With that sort of traffic, getting several hundred posts an hour is entirely do-able.

Good to hear from you Millser and hope to bump into you both some time when out boxing.

Hi Millser,

Will be around Brat/Gt. Links early-ish on Saturday shadowing my 10 tors team. Look out for a baldie bloke in shorts with a big collie.

First time I have been on the forum for a few weeks, been busy preparing several walks for the holiday next month so I have spent most of my time poreing over catalogues maps and updates.

Back soon!

I, for one, am always beaten to the answer.
Or I don't have a bleeding clue ... which is most of them

Everyone has to start somewhere - we were once novices and prone to making mistakes (I know I still make mistakes)

Morning all - as another newcomer I can say the forum has been very helpful in answering some of our questions and broadening our knowledge of the subject. As a spin off my wife is perhaps a reluctant letterboxer but she loves the forum and logs on most days - it may have smaller membership than other forums but I welcome any info as it all helps.

Looking forward to a trip to Pew Tor this weekend and hoping to get close to my 100.

Good luck getting your first 100 Searchlighters. Pew Tor was my main hunting ground when I was reaching my first 100 a couple of months ago.

Had a couple of profitable days at Brat Tor and Doe Tor earlier in the year but it was so cold we could only manage a few hours at a time...made the mistake of going into the Dartmoor Inn afterwards which seems to be a very high end gastro joint these days - we took our muddy boots away to a quiet corner and left after 1 drink! (we did get the stamp first - of course!)

moorland wizard

2008-05-02 11:51:48

we park up by the other pub "fox and hounds" very nice pub and very welcome to muddy boots, plus we could not find the carpark the first time we went up, so we use the carpark next to the pub all the time. But loads of boxes up there, everythime we go up and come home we have more wom clues to get in that area.

We did zip up the road to the Fox and Hounds - and had a very nice lunch - after the very short visit to the Dartmoor - are you able to access the moor direct from the pub car park? (or nearby)

moorland wizard

2008-05-02 14:09:36

there is a track leading up inbetween the pub and carpark past a caravan site a little walk not much then your at the foot of the tor..

Sorry, I've been a bit busy lately. I work for a stockbroker and March/April is always completely mad so I've been working weekends instead of getting down to the Moor.
