Help with clue bearings

Hi all
I used to go letter boxing some 20 years or so ago, and now have a young family and thought it would be nice for them to experience the fun of letterboxing.

I have a quick question regarding clues, do I need to take the 3 degree's off the compass bearing for clues or is this already factored into the clue bearings. I suspect I will have to take it off, but could someone clarify this for me

Many thanks

Hi Colin,

The bearings used are magnetic, and should therefore accord with those off a magnetic compass. You only have to fiddle around with the 3 degrees if you want to plot a bearing on to your map.

Hi Duckpool
Many thanks for the info and Just to clarify -
If I am taking a visual bearing I do not have to take into account the 3 degrees however if I am plotting the coordinates onto a map I do have to subtract 3 degrees?

Many thanks

Think of the night mare it would cause if everyone had to fiddle around with adding and subtracting variations everytime we had to look at a bearing.

However there are a few boxes out there that have been there for years and the magnetic variation has shifted by upto 2 1/2 degrees (or more) bearings from the TV mast, Brent Tor and other long distance bearings that are now way out. This should be down to the owners of the boxes to re-measure the bearings periodically.
Other wise it is all WYSWYG stuff...
Happy boxing!
