Pub boxes

Hello all,

What's the general response when you ask to see the box in a pub? Do the locals just roll their eyes and think "just another box-nutter!" or are they normally really helpful and help you on your way?

I'm planning a trip in September and we happen to be staying in the Forest Inn. Being my first trip, then thought I'd pick this one up as a starter for 10.

I've loved Dartmoor for donkeys years, but haven't been there for at least 10 years....want to re-light the buzz of such an amazing place.

Thanks All - Magic Harry

Welcome to the forum - nice to see new faces on here and one who isn't afraid to post something. (There are those who will sit on the fence and say nothing for months).

I know what you mean... "Another letterbox nutter..." some of the staff have no idea what a box is - which baffles me sometimes - but the most friendly pub I went to many years ago was the Brent Tor inn sadly we didn't have enough time to stamp all the stamps that were in there... way back in the days when we had to catch buses to go boxing.

But I do have many pub boxes - though alot less pubs do it nowadays mainly through ignorance. Another of my best hauls was at the Woodpecker just off the A38!

Thanks Nik - "Knight on the Moor" - great handle by the way!

Funny you should mention bus - that's exactly how I'm getting to Dartmoor this Sep. I'm hoping the Sunday Rover is still going by 7th Sep... looking forward to stopping off at the Warren Inn for a quick pint before I start hunting - I expect they have a box?

Well MagicHarry,
If you pay a visit to the Fox & Hounds and you ask for the Letterbox you may well bump into Pebbles, if you do you had better be prepared for a long talk, informative and friendly as you will not get away for ages.
It is well worth the visit with great food and pots of good stamps.

Hello Jones - our experience has always been fine when asking for the pub letterbox - the odd establishment does not have one but 90% do and are very happy to give you a view of the box - From memory the Forest In nis one that does not have a box, but the Fox and Hounds has a huge array of stamps in thier box - check out the opening of the moor stamp post foot and mouth - good luck

To the left as you go up the hill to the pub you will see the Jubilee cross. I would walk around the perimiter fence on the inside, used to be several around there also.

Yes, you are quite right. There is a box at the Forest Inn.

The Warren Inn certainly has a box - and a warm welcome! Highly recommended.

The only pub box I have is from the Chipshop Inn. Got a few inquisitive glances from the locals but it is a nice stamp with some information on it as to how the Chipshop Inn got its name. Had a stunning bar meal there too.

I have even got a pub letterbox from deep within Plymouth :!:
The Somerset Arms on North Road West had a box. Not sure if it's still there, it was a few years ago. I recall it being called the Pink Pig, and there were hundreds of piggie ornaments behind the bar. The landlord or landlady must have a thing about them
