Just an update and a warning for anyone thinking of visiting or recently visited these postboxes:

Fox Tor: The stamp has been taken from the box - a new one should be on site in September.

Laughter Tor: 2008 stamp should be on site also in September (better late than never) - if you've been up to the box for the stamp this year contact me and I'll send you prints on receipt of an SAE or any of the numerous back copies going back to '94. Christmas stamp planned as normal.

Quickbeam Hill - the box is missing, someone has taken a shine to it. The letterbox will be resited shortly.

I'll post again when stamps are out.

Welcome to the site LTP,

It will be nice to see the Fox Tor stamp out there. I have been numerous times over the years and it has been missing every time.

My brother maintains the Fox Tor letterbox - but although the stamp is currently missing, it has only been 'absent' once since he resited the letterbox in 1994. We moved the box from the tor 'plateau' a few years ago and since then visitor numbers have declined. It is fair to say that the box is now somewhat more difficult to find - but it has most certainly been on site continuously since 94.

Ooops sorry

Are we talking about the very first Fox Tor letterbox (No.32)?
I was always under the impression it was on the actual tor itself. There is a hole that looks as if it housed a metal container in years since gone.

Or is this a lesson for me to never assume?

I used to love the walk from Princetown to Quickbeam Hill, I could in the past get seventy box on that route and all without clues. Sadly since the "5 year limit" was introduced the number was decimated, and I only managed to find 14 the last time I was out there... oddly it was where I met Number 70 for the first time!

Has anyone found the metal post on Hand Hill yet? And are there any boxes sited from it? (There is a story behind that post of which I have first hand info about it...

Sly Fox - my brother 're-established' the original Fox Tor box (no.32) in 1994. It was indeed formally chained to the tor in the grove that can now be seen. Since 1994 it has been on the northern outcrop - but following vandalism we moved it further down towards Childe's Tomb.

Between 1994-2000 my brother and I adopted a number of the first 100 stamps and resited them.

Great stuff ... I love the older boxes. I am pleased to hear your brother is keeping this very very old one alive.

Are you planning to update the clue in the catalogue? And is it also possible to PM the clue to me? I would be extremely grateful.

Likewise I always assumed that this was where the box was supposed to be. However, reading the actual clue states something like 'on the tor' - which doesn't necessarily mean right at the top by the 'eyes'! I suspect I have simply been looking in the wrong place  Having said that I was actually thinking it may be further towards Rabbits Tor, so wrong again!! Doh!

LTP - many thinks for this info, as with The Sly Fox, I like the older boxes, and it's great that the Fox Tor box is still being looked after.
