We were on Roos Tor Sunday & I noticed a box in the catalogue called Fozzy Bear Is On Roos Tor (page 57 down the bottom)
Can someone explain what a Gazetteer is because we didn’t have a clue

Hi Guys - this is a new one on me - think we will need the input of some of the old sages to get this one

Hi, the Gazetteer is a small publication calles 'The Gazetteer of Dartmoor Names by Mike Brown. It is a must have little book for letterboxers as it gives the grid references to everything that is on the moors and slightly off it, from place names to mines, pits, BS's, crosses, farms, gates, corners etc. It was published by Forest Publishing, but not sure if its still in circulation. However, there is now a CD out called Mike Browns Guide to Dartmoor which also covers the 365 square miles plus 800 grid squares. A must have....

Hi - just looked this one up on Amazon and it's not available there - any idea where the book and cd can be purchased?

I have that little book somewhere - there are a few misprints in the book and an update came out for it about a year later but it disappeared and I have not heard anything of Mike Brown since.

But the book was an invaluable source for a lot of map references

Well I have a copy of the Gazetter and the supplement, so I'll definitely be hanging on to them if it's out of print now!

I would suggest having a look round at the Meet, or perhaps one of the second hand bookshops. AFAIK there's one in Ashburton that deals with books on Dartmoor.

I should add that if anyone else has any other clues requiring the gazetteer then I'm happy to provide them with the info they need if they PM me. That's assuming I'm not suddenly flooded with requests of course...! :)
