Hello fellow Northwest, well best place to start for the new hobbie is one of the books called Dartmoor Letterboxes by Anne Swinscow, there is a few like this to get hold of if you look on ebay there are many popping on all of the time.

plus many web sites on the internet if you just type in dartmoor letterboxing comes up with vasts amounts of nformation, Plus if you get stuck just send me a PM as im only down the road in Preston when im not on the ship as i have loads of information and books you can borrow.

The 101 Dartmoor Letterboxes but not how to find them... good book!
The best way I think to find out about letterboxing is to go the meet or actually get out there and look for the things.

The 100 letterbox club catalogue does have a few rules in it - most of them are common sense rules like don't site boxes in dangerous positions, cos children go after them. No boxes are to be sited in man made antiquities and stuff like that.

Though if you have never walked on the moors - good solid footwear is highly recommended, and make sure they are broken in first - all too often have I seen poor (not skint) people suffering out there with blisters caused by new boots.

Another book I would thoroughly encourage people to get is the latest book on FIRST AID. The moors being a wild place doesn't have a doctor around when you need one (With one notable exception a few years back someone was scrambling around one of the toor when they fell off and seriously injured themselves... the first two people to find the victim was an A&E doctor and the other a brain surgeon, both out enjoying a walk...
