Hello folks,

Does anyone know if there is an electronic version of the Letterbox Catalogue - I was wondering if this was available in excel or some other database?

Thanks

Yes there is an electronic version.
At least £50 for the program and then about £20-30 for the updates

It is more than just a list though its a full program

I was going to buy to catalogues next year and cut one up and scan the pages in to make my own!

Wow - very expensive. I was thinking about developing an excel model\database as well. Which could then be used to plan letter-boxing days. Also I was going to add a section on Stone Crosses, Bridges, standing stones, etc.
this would take a while initally, but would be very cheap to develop and update.

Cheers

I use Mike Holidays program and know I lot of others do also. It is around or was £50 for the program and all the clues then 75p a month for the updates. After inputting thousands of WOM clues into the program and knowing the time it takes, i would most certainly say do by the program with the clues all in. I will pm you his details. He did use to send out a demo by email of sorts if that helps.

I've made my own spreadsheet up in Excel and just copy the clues in each months through the normal updates. I've still got several thousand clues to input but it definitely does aid in planning walks.

We got the program from Mike £59 with a year’s subscription for the updates
Well worth it, gives you all the clues, put in a grid press the button & you’ll have all the box’s within that grid
:D

Ye i think it is great too. Fulchet I would think of how time it will take to enter the back log of catalogue boxes against adding any WOM ones into the program its well worth it. Just email mike for the demo, thats no cost.

As a trained typist it really hasn't that much physical time when sat doing it, it is just fitting it in in between life. All my WOM clues are on, and quite a few pages of the catalogue. If I sat down properly, it would probably all be done by Christmas, and will only cost my 40p a month to keep updated. Sadly, I find it quite therapeutic, also I know exactly who has given me the WOMs as these are marked in a separate column (hope that makes sense).

Copy and paste is a wonderful thing for all the updates and WOMs.

Had a version on an old 286 computer, it was brilliant very easy to use but - sadly the info was not transferrable to any other computers which was a bit annoying, and I spent months typing in all the clues in the book including a lot of the old clues which had been deleted... so all in all I had clues for about 80% of the boxes that had been on the moor. Since I stopped that figure has now dropped to about 40% if not less
If I ever get the time and space I will have another go at trasferring the details to another computer - I am sure it can be done and I will do it one day.

I did find with todays "modern" computers that the limit for characters is only 255 which fine for 99% of the clues in the book but there are some that dont fit - there were also up to 20000 WOM clues on it as well most of which are now obselete

I still think £59 is pretty steep. I'm Dartmoor crazy and am creating a whizzy model which also contains other Dartmoor features, some of which are not even named on the OS Maps. I reckon when finished I would be willing to pass on to folk for £30 of which £10 will go to the Dartmoor National Park (or similar) + free updates. Letterboxing should be as low cost as possible. Developing this is teaching me so much about Dartmoor - feels as if I'm always there!.

Due to be completed - Jan 09.

Cheers.

I will be making my first trip to England and Dartmoor with my husband in May (as a late honeymoon). I am an avid letterboxer in the States and hope to have at least a couple of days in Dartmoor. As this will be a very short trip, I want to be able to make the most of the time beforehand to plan out a journey that will maximize my time. Is the electronic version of the catalog a good way to do this? I don't mind the expense if it will be worthwhile.

Hi there and welcome to the site
It isn't often someone makes a post on here and it immediately grabs my attention - it usually takes a bit more time than that but the name was what got my attention... We have something in common - Surnames!

Anyway back to the thread... I am sure someone on here will be happy to help you out - it might be a good idea to try to latch onto someone who knows the moors to be your guide - I am sure someone on here will volunteer.

If you are only going to be here for a couple of days, then nearer the time you are coming over would be a better time to ask where the greater concentrations of letter boxes are
But as it stands at this time Pew Tor would have to be one of your stops

i think if you park at the pew tor car park either side of the road would be good as there are a few up there, or even if you have a map maybe widgery cross then the pub for a drink after.

Glad I was able to put a bit of spark into your day, Nik.

Thanks for the ideas. I would love to spend at least a week hunting for boxes at Dartmoor, but Ed isn't into the hobby as much as I am, so I'm figuring I'll get 2-3 days at most. I have also been looking through the Charity Walks and hope to be able to find a couple of those during my visit too.

I've also seen lists of pubs and inns with letterboxes, although I'm figuring those may not qualify as proper Dartmoor boxes. How do those work? Do you ask for them or do you hunt for them inside and/or outside the building?

From my experience you have to ask the staff for them as they are behind the bar. Obviously, you would be "looked at" if you didn't buy a drink from them in return ;)

I personally count them towards my total.

if your thinking of getting them try the fox tor cafe at princetown as they have a few there, and the prince of wales down the road have a few.

Hi there everyone (my first ever post). I'd be really grateful if someone would PM Mike's details to me too. I've been boxing for years but have always used the random method of planning a good walk and only picking up stamps if they jumped out at me. However, now I'm walking with my children, the finding of boxes has become the most important aspect, so I'm hoping to score some 'perfect parent' points!

Many thanks

Same,
Wanting to get a copy of the electronic cat, but would like to see a demo before I part with the money - as if its not any good (Which im sure it will be) then i might as well stick with the standard paper book!

Spend the money on Mike Halliday's program. The catalogue clues are already loaded into it and you pay a small amount for the update to be emailed to you as a file which then automatically updates your program. Plus you can enter into this program any WOM clues you get. Tehn when you want to walk, you just put in the squares you are walking and it automatically throws out all the boxes in that square.
