Hi All

Newbe here so here goes.

Went to Haytor this weekend after reading some posts about loads of boxes there. Well guess how many we found ............................. absolutely none  , only a dog poo bag someone had stuffed in a crevice.

So my question, what went wrong, what are we really looking for and any really good clues for a starter for ten?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I hope you still enjoyed Dartmoor - even though you didn't find a box.

Good place to start, is most pubs around dartmoor have a box - and may have other clues... for more on the moor!.

Also - try http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/lettboxmain.htm

This site has some clues listed.

Cheers

Bad luck. Best bet, don't go too high up the tors as most boxes are lower down and a bit away.

Welcome to the forum, Newbie, I hope you are a frequent visitor who can remind us what it is like to begin boxing back in the early days - mind you it wont be long before you have your 100 boxes

It isn't Haytor Itself that you find the boxes, but the area around it.
If you want a plethora of boxes you need to go to somewhere like Pew Tor or Bonehill rocks - the latter has a lot of "kids boxes".

Anyway it is a case of learning what is out there how they are hidden and the like, in some cases you need to be taught how to find a box and how peole hide the boxes.
A few years back I was sitting on a rock on Kings Tor and a family came by kids moaning that they hadn't found any boxes I had sympathy on them and without moving I pointed out 6 boxes that were around me at the time which made the kids very happy, their trouble was that they were not aware how they were hidden.... but that was the days where there were 50+ boxes around Kings Tor alone!

I'm still new at this lark and have looked around the Haytor area. I've not found any on Hay Tor itself but Saddle Tor was a lot more productive.

Good luck

Buckland beacon is another good spot you could try.

In the past we have searched the quarry waste and found several the only problem with this is a) they are mostly kids boxes and b) broken glass in the holes.

If you come from the lower car park at Haytor and cross the head for the quarry but DO NOT go in as there are non in there, (saying that it is a nice walk through it if you have the time) have a scavenge around the waste heaps, we have followed the granite railway to the 'stone bridge' out there and found a few in that area.
