A very well put articles on how to start letterboxing. Though I would add one major comment - The GPS... A wonderful piece of equipment with an achilles heel - it runs on batteries!

I would emphasis on learning to use a map and compass and learn to use it well before using the GPS. And learn to use the map and how to navigate with a map (without a compass).
Lessons on how to use a map and campass can be gotten from your local Dartmoor Rescue Group, or Scouts organisations, who I am sure would be more than happy to educate one in the use of said objects.
Maps themselves can also give you a fairly accurate time on an arrival to your destination. This is done by counting the the contor lines (going up) plus the distance .... usually 15 minutes per kilometer Plus 2 minutes per contor line.
