Hi,
I'm a graphic design student currently studing at Bath Spa Uni. I am creating a non-viable book/document based around letterboxing and could really do with a hand!
I havn't yet decided the exact area of letterboxing to base it on, but need to obtain primary research and get in contact with avid followers!
It isn't a literal book, I can be as creative and adventurous as possible!
If you think you could help in any way (tips/names/numbers/stories etc) then please email me or reply to this thread. Any help would be very very much apprieciated!
Cheers!

Erm... Confused??
What is involved in a non-viable book?
And why Letterboxing?
I've got tips, stories and heaps of numbers, but i'm unsure how to share them in a non-literal way.
And what has this got to do with Graphic Design studies in Bath?
Please explain.

I want to research letterboxers first hand, by talking to/talking photos of/interviewing/recording (not indepth-at first). Please do not be scared! Its for a book I'm creating, that will not be sold, published etc but is purely a second year (uni) project, to help me learn how to create a book/editorial piece of work. The brief was to chose a profession or activity etc and create a book based around it.
I chose letterboxing as I was introduced to it at the age of about 12 (now 20) by my grandad, and have occasionally gone 'letterboxing' - but without the aid of clues etc, with friends, as part of a walk. And to this day am very intrigued by it, especially as I'm a true dartmoor inhabitant!
Honestly, its not a serious figure finding project or anything like that, I literally would like to just get in contact with 'boxers' in the devon area.
Cheers

This could prove to be very interesting. As you all are aware letterboxing isn't just about rubber stamp meets paper is it?
Letterboxing is a passion like marmite - loved or hated - although it is a bit of an odd subject to use as a book be it viable or non-viable. I would be interested what sort of book you would be planning on creating - an adventure story - passionate - or just plain factual?
With the adventure story you could encompass a lot of the characters - past and present who have walked the moors for the elusive box. The passionate story would be a fictious love story between two people who have the same passion for their hobby, encompassing the beautiful ruggedness of Dartmoor. And as for the factual - just pick up any old book on letterboxing. It's all there....
Maybe you could put your book up on here it would be a pleasure to read it, and who knows we may even think it is a good yarn (I mean that nicely)!

Its a research based book, a collection of findings, interactions etc. I have not planned an end result as yet, but it could be a book full of notes by letterboxers (like the notebooks in the boxes) then all the ink slightly blurred to highlight the conditions (rain) that they counter on the moors. Alternatively it could be the small book full of photos that show no letterboxes but what they hide beneath/behind or a book creativly expressing the personality of a letterbox via handwriting and stamp subjectivity.
Its not a fact or fiction book, more of a image/design based research one.
The kind of thing I want, is for example...if your going letterboxing on dartmoor, would it be possible to come with you, take photos and find boxes? or if you have a large collection of stamps or a letterboxing 'shrine' could I come and take photos of it/you with it?
I go back to uni on sunday/monday so if you think you could help before then, it would be much appericiated!
Hope this makes sense!
Cheers
