Hi there! My friend and I are new to letterboxing and are totally addicted to it already so thought we'd find places to share our newfound hobby :D So here we are!

We have only found 9 boxes so far, despite visiting 5 tors today...! Though one was only Little Staple Tor, so does this count?? (we didn't find any there :( ) Our favourite is Pew Tor as this was our first letterboxing trip.

Anybody have any tips for finding boxes? or is it more a matter of perseverance? it was very poor weather today too, so this certainly didn't help.

we've left our own box out there too somewhere... but where? :o

Hello there!

I'm the other half of this dastardly duo! I've just finished updating our blog with today's escapades and some lovely photos of some Dartmoor ponies who were happy to pose for us!

Is 9 boxes in 3 visits good going for a beginner? or are we going wrong somewhere? Any hints on how to find even more boxes?

We're really enjoying ourselves and the moor, and hope you will enjoy our blog!

Happy 'boxing!

Hi guys,

Just read your blog hehe. I don't suppose you passed a bloke with a black Labrador at the top of Cox Tor when it was foggy and raining? I remember seeing two people carrying on up Cox Tor as I was walking back down!

We were heading up Cox at about 1.30pm I think, not exactly certain, I don't recall seeing anyone else out and about... the visibility was awful at that point though! If it was us, one of us was wearing a black waterproof and the other a rather snazzy white with pink spots waterproof!

We didn't see many people all day really! A couple of chaps on Great Staple, a French family on Middle Staple and an old gent walking his dog by the car park!

Lol, yeah I saw you both. I was up there the same time as you and I remember seeing two people, one with a dark jacket and one with a light coloured jacket.

I was going to head over to the Staple Tors from Cox Tor as well.

Well hi there both of you, Moof and Poom. Welcome to our friendly site.
You were asking about finding boxes.... well oddly enough I was just talking about this subject to a friend of mine the other day about having been wandering the moor for the past 20 years (not continuously I hasten to add) that I hardly ever go up any of the tors themselves. Boxes are seldom found at the top of tors as they are too easy to be stolen.

Pew Tor and the surrounding Tors hide upwards of 50 boxes but with the bracken now taking over it does make it harder to find them. The Staple Tors used to have dozens of them on there but in recent years the numbers have dropped dramatically to around single figures. I spent a day wandering around the toors and only managed to find 9 and that was a couple of years ago... when I knew there used to be a lot more than that - I visited some old sites - all gone!

Many people will walk to Roos Tor where there should be a few more (but not as many as there used to be back in the 90's before the 5 year time limit was imposed upon the boxes sited out on the moor.

I know all the boxes I sited out on the moor have all since been stolen - which is a shame. Including a set of WOM boxes which disappeared within weeks...
So basically it is down to perserverance and knowing how boxes are sited by their owners or how they are hidden by others and recognising the signs. This will come to you in time

Anyway happy hunting and I hope the weather improves for you soon
