Hi all..

My kids and i are looking to go letterboxing soon... i used to go lot many years ago but havent done much of late.. summer hols here so kids bored. They are really looking forward to going up on the moors as i am.
But, can anyone suggest any areas/tors to start with so to encourage their interest by actually finding some boxes?? We live in Exeter so can venture to north or south moor quite easily. Which tors have a good population of boxes at the moment and are not too far off the beaten track... we've all got to start somewhere :D

thanks

Hi Andy

I've just put a list of current charity walks in the charity section, this will get you well on the way to your first 100 stamps. This is how we started and you'll probably find more on the way. Also you'll be able to get stamps on the first outing rather than groping around in the undergrowth and going home empty handed - very frustrating for kids.

There are some stamps on the lower slopes and along the river under Arms Tor, Brat Tor you can park in the car park up from the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford on the A386 (the road to the moor/car park turns back on itself just before the Inn - quite hard to see so slow to a stop to make the turn). Here the river is easy to cross via stepping stones or foot bridge.

hope this helps

What about White Tor on the West side of the moor? I'm not sure if this is too far off the beaten track though...
You could park at the end of the Cox Tor road by Higher Godstone and take the short cut across Wedlake Farm's land on the public bridleway. Its bracken free, and in August, firing free. Just by looking around, you're guaranteed to find a fair number of boxes. There's flagpoles, huts, history and deep Devon 'n' Dartmoor views too!

Trouble is with this time of year - too much bracken Otherwise I would have suggested Pu Tor/Sampford tor as there are (or were) loads of boxes all around the tors - suggest you park up at Pork Hill and walk towards it via Windy Post Last time I was there there were something like 60 boxes in that area alone

Thanks ever so much for the replies.

Very helpful indeed, and that gives me definite options for the coming weeks.

Thanks again :)

There are several boxes at the base of Hound Tor (mainly placed by kiddies) - I came accross at least six boxes just last week.

Thanks
