Letterboxing and Geocaching

A new Geocache was put out at 537 761 last week and now its been stolen. I enjoy both hobbys Letterboxing and Geocaching, but it seems that 'some' Letterboxers and Geocachers (and or vandels) do not seem to like the other hobby on the moor and there are more Letterboxes going missing. And now my new Geocache is now missing.

Both hobbys are there for our enjoyment, when a box or a Cache goes missing, it makes people search hard in one area and wears the area and I would not like D.N.P.A. to ban both on the moor, this will happen if the hobby's cause damage to the Moorland.

Just enjoy Dartmoor and take care.

One question I have pondered upon for a while now is... does the NPA know of & approve of Geocaches?
I also enjoy both, but does Goecaches have to abide by the same guidelines as we Letterboxers do?

Yes Geocaches do have to apply by the same rules as Letterboxes.
I wrote to DNPA to check.
Geocaches also get checked before being published and the cacher needs to prove permission from such people as DNPA.

That is very reassuring thanks for the info.

Sorry not correct. They do get checked but they do not require approval from the DNPA, so the Caching community have the same guidelines (rules) as we do. Seems fair to me. :)

Yes they do get checked not by someone going out there to check, but they do get checked on maps, and they do need to be approved by the DNPA, I know I have some out there, I have even had one declined.

No big issue, but I did not say they did not get checked I did however say they don't require approval by the DNPA. If they do then the G.A.G.B. data base agreement is incorrect.

Further to your post "But there is always conflicting stuff on the net."
The GAGB site is not stuff on the net, but is a collection of "Landowners Permission" ,amongst other things,DMNPA is listed on that site and it does state that the NPA requires the same rules applied as that of Letterboxing. Not trying to score point, meerly trying to help.

Take care

Trouble with the internet - who knows quite what the truth really is?
I found my first geocache box on Great Staple a couple of weeks ago and it was sited rafrther obviously at least the letterboxes are somewhat better hidden
My personal view is - leave Dartmoor for the letterboxing fraternity and let Geocaching go everywhere else as far as I am concerned it is an annoying American habit in response to letterboxing but that is my opinion and not the opinion of the letterboxing 100 club or the opinions of this forum

Sorry Nik I enjoy both hobbies, and Dartmoor is for everyone. My Geocaches are well hidden. We must not say things against each of the hobbies, because this will encouage vandelism and none of us want this. Both letterboxers and Geocaches love the being in the countryside. Both hobbies are often done together.
There are fors and against both hobbies.
JUST ENJOY DARTMOOR.
