I am coming to devon at the weekend with the family and wondered if anyone could advise me on a good place to start letterboxing. Have been a long time ago with my Dad who lives in Devon but want to take my family. I have heard that Shepstor is a good place to start?

Welcome to the site Gendal, there is lots of advice on here for the novice boxer with families - you didn't say how old your kids are.... but...
I wouldn't recommend Sheepstor if you are going boxing. There are not as many on the tor as there used to be but for the view - I think it is one of the best places to start.
For boxing, I would recommend you park up at Pork Hill Car Park (Princetown to Tavistock Road) Then walk down to Feather Tor and Pew Tor and if time permits Sampford Tor. You can't miss the car park as it is effectively at the bottom of Cox Tor and there is a huge flat expanse of grass to the south. This is the way to go... South!
I would suggest looking around trees and obvious boulders as a good starting point - however do watch out for the odd quarry that has been left abandoned especially with young children.
It might be worth pointing out to the kids that Dartmoor is a wild place and you may well come across dead animals. It is part of the way of life up there...
The best bit is the icecream van when you get back which is parked in the car park... A tip for you .... if you are worried about the car park it close to the serving side of the ice cream van - at least you will have someone watching it for you!
Happy hunting
