Does anyone know why there are small black 'flags' on a piece of string draped through the trees in the valley between Haytor and Hound Tor

Hi
I have also seen these at hound tor and presumed they were to commemorate someone who had passed away?

I've only noticed these on one tree in that area - torn fragments of cloth suspended by string. There is a similar tree in Madron in Cornwell which is known as a witches tree. People make a wish as they tie up their bit of cloth. Don't know if there is any connection.

Maybe that should read - 'Black Magic' - hey?
What other possibilities?
Scouts, cubs or such, treasure trail.
Tail of a kite, lost in the wind
Pixies up to their tricks
Druids got it wrong somewhere

Anyone else got some ideas, or is it beyond the 'The Outer Limits' (that may be long before the readers age!)
