Wobbly Bootie

It is with great sadness that I have to report that “Wobbly Bootie” has gone to the great Letterbox meet in the sky.

Mike had been absent from the moor for many years due to the terrible MND.

He introduced myself and many others to the pleasures of letterboxing, his “Commando” series of boxes was a challenge to say the least, being spread all over the moor.

At the meet he would hold court, pint by his side and clouds of smoke from his pipe!

Rest in peace old friend.

So sad to hear this news Paul - Mike was one of the 'good old boys' back in the days when all boxes put out stayed relatively safe. Not so these days. He will be missed

I recollect having got some of the 'Commando series' - the last being on the Trowelsworthy tors.
Never had the pleasure of meeting him, but still feel the sadness of someone gone who loved the Moor as we all do.

Oh dear - Mike I would consider as one of my friends from the Old School of boxing, we had some adventures out on the moor perhaps the funniest was finding a cow which wouldn't stand up, we kept the cow on its feet while someone went to get the farmer who returned with a tractor and a trailor to take the poor beast home - however it couldn't be loaded on the trailor so it got unceremoniously scooped into the bucket and carted off.

Mike took a load of photos of the event but sadly I never got to see them - as he forgot to bring them to the next meet and after that he never returned due to ill health.
Yes Mike you will be missed at the gatherings

My condolences to your family and friends - it has been a priviledge to have known you

Farewell my friend

Thanks Nik for your words, Mike's funeral was last week and was well atended.

I am planning a small box on the moor in the near future in memory of "Big Mike".

If we find any photo's of the cow incident I will pass them to you.

Sad news of a letterboxer I never met, but he sounds a great lover of Dartmoor.

A sad day for me, just found this site and trawling through the forums found this sad news about Mike.

I too have fond memories of Mike "Wobbly Bootie" and his Commando series, also chatting with him at the meets trying to find out the exact position of his boxes,

I have missed all my friends on Dartmoor and am very sad to hear I will never chat with Mike again.
