Hi there folks.

I lived in Devon from 1982 to 1991, now living in Aus.

We visited the moors this (UK) summer and I took the family about some old climbing haunts. One of my favourite spots for "bouldering' was Bone Hill Rock, so we had to visit there. (Especially as its close to Hound Tor, and Alan's van!)

While I was climbing on the rocks, my wife and daughter strolled around. The daughter found a letterbox. Then another. Then the wife found one. I found one too, high in a crack on a climbing pitch.

Now I find this rather surprising as when I lived in Devon boxes were (as a general rule)
a) Hard to find.
b) More sparsely located.

Four easily found ones, we had no guide or maps, is a bit much for one small tor isn't it?

Any thoughts?

The one in the rocks - high up as you say is in a stupid dangerous position and should be removed - however there are about 50 in the Bonehill Rocks area s it is a favourite area for kids to put out boxes as an intro to letterboxing.

Sadly since your days of boxing the number of boxes on the moor has seriously reduced to about a fifth of what used to be out there this is due to the 100 club themselves and the Dartmoor Letterbox theif.
Anyway I am glad your daughter managed to find a few boxes - maybe she is hooked?

Thanks for the information Nik, mate.

There's obviously been a lot of change. What has teh 100 club been up to?

This "thief", has he had his arms broken yet?

The one "high up" could have been one moved by a climber.

The daughter could be hooked, but as we live in Canberra, and only visit the UK every few years, she's got time to get over it! :)

All the best.
