We should call this forum Letterboxing and Geocaching

This will stir a few Letterboxers up, but I have met so many people who used to Letterbox now only Geocache, I think the reason of this is there are so many letterboxes missing and vandalised. I enjoy doing both.
I put out 9 boxes last year and all went missing so I have now stoped putting out letterboxes.

This is a letterboxing forum ... if people want a Geocaching page then maybe one can be put up ... but I aint keen on it

No way - this is for Letterboxing!!!!! As Nik says if you want one for Geo caching, then sorry, but you will have to start another forum. I personally do not want to trawl through posts about geo caching in order to find anything to do with Letterboxing

Who is this person? and how long has he been a bona fide letterboxer?

Seems to me not very long!. Each to their own I suppose, maybe the person has not heard of that expression and has not abided by it.

Wonder why anyone so keen on geocaching has not set up their own site , and are still bothering with us!

Feel sorry for such a 'sad' person who is obviously lacking something.

letterboxing since 1998 and love it

Can't say I'm keen; even if there was a separate page there would inevitably be 'drift' onto the regular pages. But surely there must be geocaching sites already in existance?

No, no, no and double no!

Letterboxing sites for letterboxers; geocaching sites (which are available) for geocachers.

'nuff said! :)

I do not like the replies because it could start Geocaches and Letterboxers spoiling each others hobby, which is happening at the moment. I do not want war between Geocaches and Letterboxers because I love both hobbies. We should encourage each other and this is not happening here. Oh I tried to stop boxes being ruined. What can we do to stop the war Geocaches and Letterboxers, I have heard from both sides that if the find the other hobby they remove it. I would never spoil anyones hobby.

Who posed this response in the first place?

I have just re read SM's last post and I have to admit I(like all other letterboxers(?) are / may not be aware of a 'war' between letterboxers and Geocachers. It is only since this posting that I am aware of the other hobby and done some looking into it.

Maybe I am not wrong in supposing there is no 'letterboxing thief' as I have only heard of over the last year or so; and that it could be a 'militant' Geocacher.

No! SM, I am not trying to stir things, up just responding to what you are posting!

What war would that be then SM?????????Are you trying to start one then with this thread you started??? I have many letterboxing friends who also are actively involved in this Geocaching, so assume one can do both without being 'AT WAR'!!!!!! Its this sort of talk that starts ugly rumours.

I like all Geocachers and letterboxers, but must admit letterboxers are the best. But we must work together.

Seems to me SM your belly is nearer to the ground than a slugs - what are you looking for, a letterbox or geocache?

I wonder who would support and trust you now from either groups.
Your opening post says it all!

The trouble is the opening post is true.
I just wish people could get on with each other.
BUT I AM NOT SAYING THAT ANYBODY ON HERE GO OUT OF THERE WAY OF SPOILING FOR OTHERS, BUT IT IS HAPPENING.
What can we do to stop it?

Having read the replies, your OP stated "This will stir a few Letterboxers up" Well you did invite a confrontation did'nt you.

It must have past you by that the Site Name is LETTERBOXING & the Forum is LETTERBOXING. Geocahers have many Forums so why do you want to discuse geocaching here.

I think you will find that there is a lot of "Waring" going on from the Geocaching side, and I know that they just love to have a pop at Letterboxing. You must read their forums,as I do, to know that.

Agree with Gemma about SM provoking this as I stated in my last post also, from his opening remark.

If SM is doing a 'wind up' then he is treading on dangerous ground, not only from us but from the Geo's. Unless of course he he is more involved with them than readily known.

Sorry but the 'arbitrator' effect of your last post was like looking for the bucket after a heavy night out!

Who on this Forum would now trusts this person with their clues - certainly not me!

And geocaches don't??? Hum me thinks not.

I think you have all taken my OP the wrong way. I know many letterboxers and the other hobby, and like them all and trust them to. You all do not seem to know me on here, except on here, when we write things on here it can be taken the wrong way.

I have not ment anything negative towards Letterboxing, but we all now now that most people on here, even me now think this should be for Dartmoor letterboxing only.

I must say thankyou to everyone on here that have put out boxes for us to find.

What in the above prevokes Letterboxes, I have just stated what I have heard from 3-4 Geocaches. WHEN THESE PEOPLE TOLD ME THIS I WAS NOT TO HAPPY IN WHAT WAS SAID.

Must admit I do aggree with Nik.

I know I started it, but I aggree with some of the positive coments like the one above.

But why have there been so many boxes missing lately, when I used to box 10 years ago nearly all boxes were there, but now there is about 10% missing.

IMO the reason the Letterboxes get vandalize is because the hobby is very well know. Books written, web site easy hit, pass on over the generations etc... The other hobby is not so well known but I guess they get targeted just as much.. they certainly do around me.I think it has always gone on & the more we publish the fact that boxes get vandalize the more it will attract the attention of those who have strange thoughts.

My ten penneth :)

That is relatively easy to answer....
10 years ago 99% of us who went letterboxing went armed with a map clues, compass and a 6 figure reference (an 8 figure reference was a luxury!). This meant the letterboxer had to go out and a take time looking for a box.
Sadly today armed with a GPS with 10 figure references you can walk to a one metre square and find the box failry quickly... is this letterboxing? I don't think it is... or is this now become a glorified orienteering exercise? Speed seems to be the order of the day In days of old the average letterboxer would gain an experience of where everything is and see the history of Dartmoor around them. Many who go out boxing leave the moor without a clue of survival and even less when they leave it. I know I have been out there in a few dense fogs and it hasn't phased me.
Now this quick location of boxes means it is the same for the Dartmoor letterbox thieves and I say thieves because because that is what we probably have out there. Probably half a dozen or so having a competition on how many they can get. I know they don't care about our hobby, rather like those who destroyed Hound Tor a few years back, they didn't care!
Another reason I believe is the farmers have had enough of people tramping over their land and want to discourage people siting boxes in a certain area.
