The love of Dartmoor and Dartmoor Letterboxing

People on here may of got the wrong idea of my last topic, I do not think I put it accross very well. I have had so many people say that they take Geo-Cashing up instead of Letterboxing that I would never do, but I do combine the two.
But I did get some answers. Like me you would not like this forum to be called GC and LB forum.
Saying in the opening sentence (this will stir up), it did. But it may of made me look like a stirer, but this was not the intension.
I love reading this forum and its great we have a place to chat.
I expect I chatted to a few of you at the Spring meet, which myself and The Ambling A's enjoyed.
Hope to see a few of you at the next meet.

Happy Christmas to all who love Dartmoor.

PS I hope this is a none stiring post.

As I saw it you were asking a question - which was fair enough - and caused a bit of interesting debate
I think you were right to air the question and I hold nothing against you for doing it. Some of the answers given really demonstrated the feelings towards Geocaching.

The idea of creating a page for Geocaching will have to be bounced off the owner of this site but creating a page for it is simple enough.

Anyway - Merry Christmas to you all!

SM - why a new thread? - the views remain the same and change nothing.

You should enter for 'Strickly come Dancing' your 'underdog approach' will probably win you the vote!

Interesting to note that the other thread had 484 views to date but only 21 comments.

Are there any real letterboxers still around?

I joined this Forum becaused it was solely devoted to Letterboxing(correct me if I was wrong!) as did all others? If this is going to change then maybe a reader can offer an alternative Forum for true letterboxers to join. Let`s hear from you.

What is a true letterboxer? I have been doing it for 20 years and love it and will never stop. So am I a true letterboxer?

This is a true letterbox forum and should not be changed.
My last thread was put accross because I have had 3-4 people saying that they have gone to GCing only, I wanted to find out what people would think of adding GCing to this forum even though I was not completly keen.

Another thing its got this forum active again, and hearing differant views from people.

Just a bit puzzled - thought I saw on your signature that you had about 400 boxes to date but you seemed to have deleted that. If you have been letterboxing for 20 years, that's not very many for a 'true letterboxer'. I have been boxing since 1985 and todate have just over 26,000 boxes collected, so just wandering why your total is so low ??????

I go for the difficult ones around cut hill and fur tor, but now I am not so healthy I will be getting the easier ones. I have about 4437 now.

Are you sure it is 20 years as in another thread you said you have been letterboxing since 1998, my maths is not Brilliant but I think that would only be 11 years?. Also are you sure about the 4437 as it did say 400ish on your signature?

I have been boxing for almost 20 years and the way I see it is anyone who goes out collecting is a letterboxer. Especially if they care for the moor.
People who go out and collect boxes and have no respect for the moor are not letterboxers.
This might be just a technicality but I have in my possession over 10,000 impressions of stamps but I still have 301 to go before I reach my 5,000 does that make me a non bonifide boxer?
I would dearly love to commute to Dartmoor every weekend just to go out boxing but I don't - somewhere in my commutes I go down to Plymouth to visit family and friends!

It is obvious that the majority of people on here are not fans of geocaching (which includes me to a point) but I am not going to say which is better or which is worse - each to their own I suppose. But there is no need to be raising the blood temperature because someone likes an alternative hobby.

The thing with geocaching is the fact it has taken off globally whereas letterboxing has basically remained a Dartmoor Quirk - yes I know there are a few outside Dartmoor - but it is only a few.

I have mentioned in earlier posts I have only ever found one Geocache box and thought it was just rubbish maybe it was too small - who knows?

This is the season of goodwill (well it is supposed to be) so let us set an example and let it be the season of goodwill

Started letterboxing myself in 1998 on my own correct. Been letterboxing for 10+ years before that with other people not collecting stamps myself. For 6 years of this I was working 12 hours 7 days a week so did not have time to venture on the moors, even though I could see it from where I lived.

For the 4000+ my finger hit the 4 twice.

When I go on Dartmoor I do not always box, just walk. I enjoy so many things about Dartmoor that I do not have time to do them all, like watching wildlife, history of Dartmoor and photogaphy.

Hope the above has answered some questions.

As far asI am concerned this issue is taking no one any further, no one else appears to be interested enough to comment so I suggest it is closed.

Have a nice Xmas all.

The Wandering Artist what is your problem.

This is supposed to be the season of goodwill
If this continues then I will be forced to delete the thread
I have never seen this sort of stupid accusations and cross accusations flying around on one thread before
This has always been known as a happy forum?

Or is this a case of the dreaded unwanted visitors about to hit home for Christmas? And everyone is venting their anger?

Station Master

2009-12-25 00:31:49

I have no anger.
But happy for you to delete me from this forum.
People seem to ate me here.
But when I meet people on Dartmoor Letterboxing they seem to be so pleasent and share so many good things.
But on here it seems to be a selected few, and some people seem very nasty.

Why would I want to delete you? - I have no problems with you or your input - what I suggested was to delete this thread... you are too valuable to be chucked off the forum without a good reason.
As faras I could see the previous thread was to see about the viability of having a Geocaching section on this forum - with feelings running so high against Geochaching it really isn't worth it....
Maybe later or if Tomp decides it would warrant having a section for it... I know I could create a room for such purposes - but my gut feeling would possibly discourage people from wanting to use the forum.

However it was an interesting thread to say the least - it definitely lit the forum up again.

Don't take this to heart Station Master - no one 'hates you' - you opened up a debate which we joined in and aired our views - that's what a debate is all about. You have to accept that sometimes you lose an argument, but that doesn't mean we want to 'kill you'. You have your views, which are appreciated, the others have theirs. If and when I meet you on the moors, I shall treat you the same as all the other boxers I meet - have a chat, have a laugh, discuss other boxes and boxers, probabaly mention and continue the debate  then move on. Anyway - go and have your Christmas dinner - I'm waiting for the damn turkey to cook - enjoy the rest of the day. No boxing for me for a couple of days, still very frosty and very, very, icy roads.

The above got to me.

But I have got the forum to life.

I DO AGGREE TO KEEP THIS FORUM TO DARTMOOR ONLY.

I love letterboxing 100%

I will not mention the other.

BUT I DO ASK FOR PEOPLE TO RESPECT EACH HOBBY AND NOT TO VANDALISE EITHER LB'S OR GC'S

I am off to Dartmoor tomorrow for a a walk I am not sure if I will Letterbox or not.

If you think people on here are nasty I suggest you pop over to the OTHER forum!! which is dedicated to that particular pastime, there are some nasty ones there I can assure you.

Nik keep the thread open. I think it is good that one can express one's own views but without getting personal.
:)
Happy New Year :)

Have we all calmed down now?

I must admit I didn't think this topic of geocaching would provoke such a response
Having said that I suspect there are a lot of people out there who geocache and have never heard of letterboxing and vice verca.

looking back on this topic, it proves that it is easy to reply on here, but I bet if we were all in a pub the topic would of died with no replies.

Surley that is what debat is all about, unless you made a statement, then yes you are correct.

I'm sure you did not mean to upst anyone but it seems you did.
All mended now pehaps we can all move on.

But I don't want to move on this is or was a fun debate.
I am not a geochacher - I look upon it as an American invader.
But if both hobbies get people out into the countryside breathing clean air then I have to say that they area good thing.

It is a shame the Americans have to change the way thngs are.
I wonder what the DNP opinion of geochaching is I know they accept letterboxes begrudgingly

But I am not so sure that Geocachers accept Letterboxers. Having read through some of the forum posts we "don't have any rules with to regards siting boxes, neither does NPA give any form of permission, and it is their understanding that we can place a box anywhere". :?: :?:
