I want to take a youth group of 13 yr old lads up to Dartmoor for a very brief letterboxing next week, it'll be two or three hours max - can anyone recommend a place or route for absolute beginners for a short amount of time?
Many Thanks!

It might be worth trying the Cox Tor/Staple Tors area. There are not that many around Pew Tor/Feather Tor at the moment as there have been in the past due to so many boxes having been stolen. Otherwise, take a drive up to Widgery Cross/Arms Tor area, which is always very popular and you will probably find plenty up there.
Enjoy.

This will depend upon the Kevin Factor of the group of lads and how many are going to go. Two hours isn't that much time to play with. As for Pew Tor I suspect it is suffering the same fate as North Hessary/Yellowmead Farm the area is being swept by farmers to reduce the number of boxers in the area and therefore reducing the amount of disturbance to livestock.
Probably the best thing to do is to make out a route to a tor and see what you can find on the way, aslo, use the catalogue to find known boxes. A trip to Roos Tor Flagpole and back should allow you to randomly search and deliberately search.
Though I must admit a trip to Widgery Cross is a bit daunting as a first time trip
hi,
just wanted to say that i went up to Brat Tor/Widgery cross for about 3 hour walk with my 6 year old and we got 15 boxes. so if he can do that i'm sure that these13yr olds would be fine! Also Yar Tor (above dartmeet) is well populated with boxes and doesn't involve any difficult terrain. again well within the capabilities of a six yr old for a few hours.
Good Luck

I agree AD I think the Brat Tor/Widgery Cross area would be absolutely fine for teenage boys, which is why I suggested it.
So pleased you did well with your 6 year old lad.
