Hello all,

Very much new kids on the block here. Curious as to some of the abbreviations used, and have found some posts linking to these which have helped. Have noticed WOM in some posts - but can't find an explanation. Can someone enlighten us please?

Thanks

 Yes it means Word of Mouth. These are clues put out by letterboxers who only distribute them to other letterboxers who also have clues to swap. They usually stay on the moor as WOM until the group you sent them to have had a chance to go and get them. After a year or so, they are then checked by the owner, re-potted, re-booked (sometimes) and then put on the catalogue updates. This was started way back when the LBT (Letter box thief) first started stealing boxes to protect your own box from being stolen. Sadly the LBT has now infiltated the WOM set and these are also being targetted.
All other abbreviations you will find on another thread.

Actually the WOM box was the only way to get letterboxes before the introduction of the catalogue with letterboxers frequently getting clues on the bus on the way home after a days letterboxing.
These clues were frequently typed and photocopied none of this word processing on a computer.
I agree with the comments about the dartmoor letterbox thief - with the introduction of the gps it has made stealing boxes a lot easier, which is why the 100 club is trying to persuade all new boxes to have a 6 figure map reference so it takes time looking for it with a compass

... for your helpful and prompt replies. Sad to hear boxes are being stolen. One wonders what pleasure the 'thief' gets from this. Presumably they are not lurking nearby to witness the disappointment of the seeker ?I'm sure this matter has been debated here already - but thanks for the 'heads up' warning.
