Hi

I'm a geocacher and whilst out on a walk on holiday with some friends we were geocaching and accidentally found a letterbox (Poppys Box) up on dartmoor.

I know some letterboxes are also caches (called Letterbox Hybrid caches on geocaching.com) but this one doesn't seem to be on hte geocaching website.

Do you have a similar central site for letterboxing and logging the find? I signed the logbook in the letterbox (didn't have a bit of paper to use the stamp from the box on).

Many Thanks.

p.s. it's located in a great spot with stunning views and well worth finding.

Most of this information can be found elsewhere on the site ... but I am happy to go through it again...

Letterboxing is a hobby which is the forerunner of the Geocache phenominom which is currently sweeping the globe.

For the letterboxing people the method to getting acknowledged is to collect your first hundred stamp impressions and present your stamps to the 100 letterboxing club, this is usually done at the meets in the spring and autumn (next meet is this Sunday). This can also be done by post and in person to the right people all of it is a manual system and not electronic ie. internet.
Traditionally it used to be the case where you had to collect your first hundred stamps without the cluebook and to join the 100 letterbox club.
As traditionalists we on here try to encourage this practice because it is meant to prove to the club that you are serious about the hobby, but it is not mandatory except the number of stamps you have.

It may well seem an antiquated system but it works and stops fraudulant claims! Not that anyone is trying to race anyone else to reach the required figures because this is an individual pastime and the only person you would be ripping off is yourself and your honesty.

Badges are awarded for 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 stamps collected.

There used to be badges available for going to Fur Tor (North Moor) Cranmere Pool and Ducks Pool and the only way you can get these was to get an official stamp from the mentioned areas.

There is no online database for members to register

I think that's it - if I have missed anything I am sure someone else will add to the list of things I have written
