American Letterboxers Seeking Dartmoor Guide

We may be completely crazy- please tell us if we are- but we're planning a visit to Dartmoor mid-December and want to spend some time letterboxing on Dartmoor.

We have been letterboxing for a couple of years in the U.S. but it's such a different "sport" here, and we want to try it in its original form the Dartmoor way.

We've read so much about the moor and its changeable weather, unmarked "trails", etc. that we're hoping we can hire a guide to accompany us on our treks.

If you are interested or know someone who might be willing, please let us know.

We will arrive in the Dartmoor area 17 December and plan to be there for a week or more.

Spectacular indeed! Maybe we should be thinking of doing some cross country skiing there in December rather than letterboxing! lol

If there is snow on the ground - you will find it very difficult to find any boxes as out on Dartmoor the boxes are usually 'plugged' in the ground or in holes under rocks. Also the roads tend to get blocked off especially the higher up you go.

Ross W - My guess is the photo was taken at the top of Dartmeet Hill just before it dips down to Badgers Holt

I'll go along with the top of Dartmeet Hill too.

As for visiting Dartmoor in mid December - you wont get many good boxes as the better ones are further into the moor and the time/daylight constraints will seriously be against you. There are plenty of commercial stamps nearer to the roads

As for the daylight situation, Even today it felt pretty dark out on the moor at around 3pm, and myw ord wasnt it wet today!
