FUR TOR

Hi everyone, we are still new to letterboxing and would value the advice of some of you who are wise in the ways of the moor. On Saturday we did a great circular walk from Long Plantation up to Devils Tor and Beardown Man. From there we could see Fur Tor in the far distance. Its somewhere we want to go to, and I wondered if anyone had reached it from this direction or is it better to go via Postbridge via Cut Hill which is we understand the suggested route. Any helpful advice would be gratefully received.

The route to Fur Tor via Cut Hill from Postbridge is fine provided that you only want to visit Fur Tor. It is a long round trip, and just searching around Cut Hill and Flat Tor could slow your progress down somewhat...

Instead, my recommendation is to park at Bagga Tor (North West of Peter Tavy). From here, make a beeline for Walkham Head and you are nearly at Fur Tor. In my personal opinion Dartmoor's best view is near here - from Walkham Spur looking North.

You can take time to look around Tavy Hole on the way back too.

Enjoy!

I will have to agree with that sound advice.
I remember walking to Cranmere Pool from Princetown. We went via Two Bridges, Wistmans Wood, Crow Tor, Devils Tor, Cut Hill and Fur Tor. We came back via Great Mis Tor and this has to be one of the toughest treks I have done. Mainly because it ridiculously hot (unforcast) and we found so many boxes on Cut Hill we spent nearly four hours there.
I always said I will go from Bagga Tor next time I visit the area. Fur Tor is definately worth the walk, and has one of the oldest letterboxes.

That does sound like a long, long way. Perhaps we may try a cut down version one day, that said a letterbox walk yesterday starting from Sheepstor to Ducks Pool etc nearly finished us off so I don't think we would fare to well on anything much longer.

I'm afraid only 406 and counting

As mentioned beware of the heat - dehydration is as big a handicap as is freezing weather. Take plenty of fluids with you and some sterilization tablets.
If you run out of water, find a stream and put your bags down walk 100m upstream and the 200 down stream and back to your bags make sure there is nothing dead in the water and it should be ok to drink after sterilizing.
Fur Tor/Cut Hill is a long trek - especially when it is hot

Well
We took the advice and set off this morning in cool weather from Baggator. The idea was not to do any letterboxing until we got to Fur Tor. After Lynch Tor the going was rough all the way to Walkham Head and even rougher afterwards. Having left about 1045 we got to Fur Tor at 1215pm, starving so before boxing we had something to eat, in the meantime the mist came in and in no time at all you couldn't see more than 30 feet and it started to chuck it down, so much so that the dog was trying to cower into impossibly small holes. Thinking discretion was the better part of valour, we didn't stop to letterbox but turned around and headed back through mist and rain. Got back soaked even through overtrousers, luckily we had dry stuff in the car. The original idea was a recce for a WOM walk, but we have now decided against it as it would be too hard for a fair number of people. The walk itself was great and getting to Fur Tor at last was a dream come true, but we left the car with 450 letterbox stamps and returned still with the same number.
That said thanks for all the advice, it was a good way to go, and I actually got some pics before the buckets started dropping.

PS Got back home to Teignmouth and there hasn't been a drop, and the garden needs it.

 What rotten luck to get rained on after you had planned such a trip. I went out from Bagga Tor Gate last week. Hoovered up about 20 boxes on Lynch tor then made my way down Black Lane to Fuges Post. Got a few more around there. The walking was very dry so was able to walk the moor without too much trouble. The views as always stunning, but what a difference a day makes  Lovely sunny day down here in Torbay and earlier on I had to spend time watering the tubs and hanging baskets.
