Returning to 'Boxing - need some help!

Hey all

Ive recently come back to 'boxing after moving away from the region for some years. Now I am back, I am getting my kids hooked on the search for small boxes hidden on the moor.

I need some help though - we have got a total of 31 boxes so far, but the task is becoming harder and the elusive 100 for the clue-book is seeming further away.

is anyone willing to provide some clues to help us on our way? PM me if necessary

ideally I would love some clues from the guidebook - maily from the SW part of the moor as I can only take the young kids on the easier parts of the moor (roughly between Plymouth/IvyBridge/Princetwon/Tavy). I am not looking to be handed the stamps, but the clues to find them would be a benefit.

I am spending moor time on the more difficult part of the moor, but with RA its not as easy as it used to be.

Would graciously accept any assistance and pleae look out for my stamp when it finally gets made - would love to hear from anyone who sees my stamp!

I don't think you need 100 boxes for your catalogue .. just to become a member of the 100 club I think. I personally find the catalogue too time consuming to use anyway and more often then not the boxes listed aren't there anymore.

As you are from Plymouth, try parking at Norsworthy bridge and walk up Down Tor towards the stone row and back via Combshead. There's dozens of nice boxes (no disney either) scattered about. Don't go over the top of the tors, but walk along the slopes instead ..

You don't need 100 stamps for the catalogue????? Damn, I wish we had known this as would have saved a few evenings searching around Haytor & Saddle Tor and finding much more than just letterboxes!!!! Even found a dustbin lid one evening!

Haytor used to be pickled with boxes... you didn't mention how long you have been away... 5 years? 10 years cos some things have changed in that time.

In the last 5 years the DLT has run riot and 10 years the 100 club put a 5 year limit on registered boxes.
Areas have been cleared of all boxes and most recently the bus service has had a rehash of the timetable

Thanks Gemma - top news, Ill get on this straight away

in reponse to Nik - what is DLT and what is this about the 5 year limit?

Ive been away for 11 years and I am surprised things have changed so much!

DLT is the Dartmoor Letterbox Thief - sadly some moron goes out and just steals letterboxes from a particular area, then moves on to another. Those of us who have had boxes stolen would like them back, or if he/she/it has chucked the pots away just give us back our stamps!

The 5 year limit is the limit the catalogue organisers have put on boxes in the catalogue. As you can imagine with all the new boxes being put out, if they kept those in that were registered way back in the 80's we wouldn't be able to lift it. They now require you to re-register your box once its 5 years old for it to stay in the catalogeu. This means you should go out and check your box is still O.K., perhaps put a new book in, then re-register it.

Hello Janner Jester,
another Letterboxing group that has come to the forfront in more recent years are those boxers who put out "Word of Mouth" clues.
They are circulated by e mail by the W.o.M. clue owner to various other trustworthy boxers and are not for general release. You will need to gain some detailed individual knowledge of the boxers within this group before you will be able to access those clues.
Personally we do not have any current W.o.M. clues that we could send on to you, most of our stuff is now several years old!

What you stated could be misread. Can you confirm you refer to WoM clues of your own.

By stating "WE" and "Our stuff" ,we were refering to our own W.o.M's.
We are not in the habit and never have been in the habit of passing on other boxers clues.

With a bit of careful planning I believe the WOM boxers could finally catch the DLT, or at least identify the person.
I never hand out WOM clues to anyone else without permission of the owner, over the years thousands of clues have crossed my path.
If anyone wants WOM clues ask the owners for them, they can either say yes or no... just don't feel offended if they say no... I have had more no way answers than clues but it don't matter and I don't feel offended either.
The only time I ever felt offended was the day I was sent some clues I went out and collected them, I met the owner the following day who demanded who gave me the clues - the fact that they did wouldn't wash. Some people can be a bit strange....
