Just to start this off I current have 1035, though I took a 15 year break from letterboxing. I am sure many of you out there can beat that total.

Spoke to people at the meet who have over 20,000, obviously over many years. We have a happy 654 after 12 months.

Exeter Bog Hoppers, how many years has it taken you to get to just under 7000?

Those people who have got to 20,000+ must spend all their spare time on the moor. That type of figure represents many miles and is quite an achievement.

Just over 200 since June. :D

27,129 - since 1985 and no I don't spend all my time on the moors, just been at it a few years. Not easy in the early days when all you had was the catalogue to go on. Nowadays what with WOM and loads of charity walks to do must be getting easier for you all.

we been doing it for about 6 years

Well you should get double my score by the time you reach my age

Kenton Kestrel

Are you aware of anyone with more than your 27,129 which, even though you have been letterboxing since 1985, is a staggering total.

I have collected 959 stamps since about March 2008. I WILL get over 1000 by the time of the next meet in March!

Oh yes, my friend Sheron has over 28,000 and I know of many who are well over the 30-35,000 and stillgoing strong. Seems once retirement age comes along the men seem to find a new lease of life and get out there everyday they can. Pity my hubby hates it  thats why I walk on my own

Must of visited well over a 1000 boxes over the years but this was mainly with my parents.

Now being alittle older and with a family of my own and my wife getting the letterboxing bug ever-so-slightly (still can't get her to do the really long walks yet), we've started afresh this year so current total is running at 176.

965, though given I live far from the Moor, not all are Dartmoor ones. Most recent finds were near Washington DC.

Kenton Kestrel

Not a bad total when you consider that you can't exactly pop to the moor for an afternoons boxing. You have quite a time consuming and costly round trip!

Tell me about it.... with fuel set to double in price again (yes you read me right there) it will make it impossible for me to afford to get there more than once a year

moorland wizard

2011-12-10 12:53:46

im close by to the moor, but even with fuel prices, wish they would spend money and put the railway back to save everyone money, plus think it would make money in the long run......

reg the bullmastiff

2011-12-10 18:36:23

Reg the bullmastiff and I have around 88.
HOWEVER Reg has a bit of a limp (split nail) so we won't be able to cover much ground tomorrow. the plan was to go to High Willhays but instead we will head off to Sharpitor and Leather Tor before lunch at the Plume of Feathers.
My usual haul is around 3 in a day (I don't take it too seriously!) but tomorrow will push to get over the 100 (sounds easy 12+ hu?)
So if your about and see a guy with a big dog please say hello it would be good to meet some of you.

2011-12-10 21:04:28

Good luck to you and Reg. Let us know whether you get to a hundred before Reg decides it is time for his lunch!

Nik - KOTM

2011-12-11 07:29:05

If memory serves you'll be lucky to find 5 or 6 on Leather Tor and perhaps 2 around Sharpitor... depending upon the route to Princetown may determine the rest

2011-12-12 21:24:02

Bloody hell your good...... or am I crap at this?
Found 5 on Leather Tor Before getting wet through to the skin and beating a retreat to the Rock Inn, Yelveton.
HOWEVER only 3 had stamps in so the score is now 91.
Have you ever noticed no matter how bad the weather there are always plenty of hardy folk up on the moor?
RESPECT BROTHERS AND SISTERS sniff.........
I hate getting wet!

Nik - KOTM

2011-12-13 07:01:02

I hate getting wet too...
I do remember the days when a good days boxing could be had around that area (20+ boxes), but, with the decline in boxing since the reduction in the size of the catalogue has made it harder.
If you had gone east there were loads more to be collected most of which have now gone so from one of my favourite areas has turned into a letterbox desert

The Sly Fox

2011-12-13 23:56:09

I am pleased with my 1,578 stamps so far
I have found another 100+ empty boxes over the years too
Sadly, I've only been on the moors a couple of times this year

Know someone with around 80.000.

We have 1.600 since 1985, not bad considering we are from Austria and have been letterboxing since 1985, flying there and back.

We may not have the most boxes, but perhaps the oldest tradition ...

It is the 4th generation (my kids and nephews) that are letterboxing and that from Austria (except for the 1st generation, my grandparents who were from Plymouth).

Kenton Kestrel

2012-01-13 20:40:49

Very impressive in view of where you live. How often do you get to visit Dartmoor?

Around 2 - 3 times year

And we moan about the cost of fuel back and forth to the moor! Keep up the family tradition and good hunting.
