What's the strangest thing you have seen on the moors?

I've seen some weird things in my time, but one of the strangest was about 15 years ago between Chinkwell and Honeybag where I was greeted by an old bearded man...walking with a cat in tow!

Has anyone else encountered this strange man? I'd like to think this is not just my imagination!

I think the very same weekend I stumbled across a couple "at it" up by Cat Hanger Rock. Embarrassed faces all round.

Strange, strange time!

I had a chat about this with my mother and a friend the other day, both walkers.

Not much for myself, only at Saddle tor a couple of months ago, a scottish man walking in shorts and an anorak, carrying a carrier bag and a ram's skull. (Half a mile from the road, and I knew he was Scottish because I exchanged hellos!)

My mother has a couple. Once driving over the hairy hands bridge at Dartmoor, she saw a coffin in the middle of the road. (It was dark and she was following a friend who didn't see anything) She's also seen a dead mare with a half-born foal. (Died in the act of foaling).

A friend once found a fully skinned pony too, and a pentagram (different occasions)

What do you mean "at it"? lol

Saw a young woman walking BAREFOOT the other day near Great Links Tor, apparently barefoot walking is becoming "ALL THE RAGE!" think I will stick to wearing my berghaus boots.
Too much poop up on the Moors, don't fancy getting it between my toes?
SHE DIDN'T SEEM TO MIND THOUGH......... yuk.

Yesterdays strange thing was an ammo box...

I was munching a snack sheltered by the cairn on Cosdon in the mist when I noticed an ammo box next to the trig point. Before I left the hill top I took a closer look, this ammo box was vary new and shiny and had printed on it " contents two fragmenting grenades" I decided NOT to open it. At which point a squaddie appeared out of the mist, clipped a glow stick to the ammo box and ran off again.

I saw no body else all afternoon.

Not so much strange as unexpected!
1 A D of E group of girls 'skinny' dipping in the leat by Nuns Cross Farm late evening - I was after a Lairseakers box at the time and planting one of mine just off the weir.

2. A shapely young lady nude sunbathing!! early one morning near the frog rock on Belstone Tors ridge The box I was after was in a hole at the base of the rock near her head!

3. Many years ago whilst out with my (now ex) son in law - we had parked just after Okehampton camp - at the space above Cullever Steps.
On the way we had noticed a couple of stationary military vehicles at the side of the road with a few bodies wandering around them. Anyway we set off over the hill towards the flag pole in a low light and misty cold morning but hadn`t got far when the ground seemed to erupt in all directions - it was a couple of dozen well conceiled squadies well armed!

4. One winters day back in the `90`s, we were walking in the area of Kneeset Nose after a box sited in rocks high above the stream. It was cold with a light snow all around. What an amazing sight was where the water of the stream was cascading down over the rocks and the spray had frozen to form 'umberellas' - domes just like in the Eden project! Also spray on tall grasses had frozen so that the droplets blowing in the wind gave a tintabulation of bells!

Could go on for a lot more - maybe one day I should put it all in a book!

 I've seen lots of strange things, some very sad. The funniest was driving my 4 x 4 up the military road between West Mil and Row Tor. Pulled over onto the bank with the shogun facing Row Tor and decided to have a coffee before setting off. Suddenly I could hear a 'tap', tap coming from under the car. Jumped out, looked under and there was a poor squaddie camoflaged in a hole and I had driven over the top of his hideout. How lucky was he I managed to straddle his hideout with the car wheels

Ine of the strangest things I have seen out on the moor was a chemical toilet, nothing unusual in that you might think, but it was over a mile from the nearest road.... someone had to have carried there.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful things was walking up the road from Hexworthy on an early Autumn morning and seeing the gorse bushes draped in miles of gossamer threads glistening with the dew.

On the porn point of view (and it was) walking around Burrator reservoir some lass was giving her bf a bj

I've seen quite a few mangled sheeps and ponys, with their skulls a long way from their bodies....

But the strangest thing is what I heard one day.....I was walking past Eylesbarrow and heard flute music, couldn't see anyone around, probably just me....

I'm almost convinced this is "a thing"! I heard a brass band for about half an hour whilst at Cranmere pool very early on a grey day this year when I hadn't seen anyone for a couple of hours. Nobody in sight! There have been other times I've heard unlikely music too.

I have seen this sort of 'activity' many, many times on the moor:
At Crazywell Pool, Trowlesworthy Tor, Ducks Pool, North and South Hessary Tors, Little Mis Tor, Wistmans Wood, Peek Hill, Ger Tor, Fernworthy Reservoir, Bellever Tor, to name a few, and even at Postbridge (on the grass by the clapper bridge)
