Oldest logs?

Had a mixed bag today. Lots of missing boxes around Buckland Beacon (and a missing Geocache), which was disappointing.

But on the flipside of that, I found a very obvious box near Hollow Tor today that was two lunchboxes and had been out since 1998! 13 years on dartmoor without being stolen, trampled, crushed, set fire to (there were campfire remains less than a foot away!). The stamp was intact, the logbook slightly damp but still usable, the tupperware still okay.

I thought that was pretty good and walked away impressed, but I'm wondering - what's the oldest logbook you've found (with obvious history, not just a fake date!)? Cranmere's obviously the oldest site, but the book is replaced one or twice a year.

Now, now!

If nothing else, the above shows both have equal problems on the moor.

I found a hand-cut stamp last July near Glazebrook head (which it was also depicting) that was sited in 87. I was the first visitor since 1995 and everything was bone dry.

Last year I found a metal stamp near Harbourne man that was sited in 1991 and last found in 1999.

Blimey! Was it plugged and buried, or inaccessible in some other way? (Perhaps moved aside by a glacier!)

Not to upset Gemma :) - but we were searching for the geocache there. I found it in a sea of gorse - somewhere I wouldn't normally go. It is the only metal stamp I have ever seen as well.

The other one at Glazebrook head was just lying inbetween 2 boulders - fairly deep but not covered. I was surprised it was so old. Oh and again I was on my way to the geocache there :)

Not to upset Gemma :) - Na not upset. I agree the problem of theft is not confined to Letterboxes.

I still have a very large number of boxes still out on the Moor from 1992 onwards, and most last visited 1997/8 although the clues have been reissued and these are being 'revived' - still in very good condition I might add!
