I'm looking at potentially getting the letterboxing catalogue, but don't have a cheque book - is there a means of getting it other than by cheque? For obvious reasons I'm not that keen on sending cash in the post - and I'm not even sure if it'd be accepted?
could you send a postal order?
buy them from a post office, they can be made payee cashable only or open. IIRC.
Get a friend to write a cheque?

If you wait a month until theend of March you can get the new 2012 edition at the Bi-annual meet at Lee Moor. You could spend a day there, buying all sorts of charity walks, letterboxing accessories etc.
If you can't get there, then get in touch with Sylvia Moore who sells the catalogue and she can perhaps help you out with suggestions. One of which would be to pay the money directly into her account at your nearest bank. Obviously she would have to give you the account details first. Lots of businesses are now doing this as well.

The new catalogue is probably already published by now
