I have looked on the internet and every book I have on Dartmoor but have been unable to ascertain why Sammy Arnolds Lane is so called. Can anyone help me?

Yes I think the Lane is named after someone called "Sammy Arnold?"

(thought I would get in first before the Sowerby Streaker comes up with something factual, accurate and sensible) Bet I am right though

  No such luck on this one - you should have made this your challenge Gary. I've always known it as Sammy Arnolds Lane since the early 80's when I started boxing. When my son did his Ten Tors one of the manned tents was at 'Sammy Arniolds Lane' - stillhave that walk map somewhere. Will do a bit of digging about this one though and see if I can come up with a reasonable explanation. I'm sure Sammy Arnold must have been a character/farmer/ of the moors to warrant a place name on Dartmoor!!!

Many thanks Reg. Your in depth knowledge of the moor has no equal.

'Walking Dartmoors Ancient Tracks' by Eric Hemery page 202
Peat cutter brought down countless loads of peat from Dinger Plain for Knack Mine - hence the lane took his name ever since.

As you now know - Frank is also a walking encyclopedia on Dartmoor. A very knowledgable gent.

Gary and I were only wondering the other day how many rocks make up Eastern White Barrow. Can anyone help us?
