Cater's beam

I was walking across Cater's beam today and I noticed the railway sleeper had been recently uprooted. Surely that's going to upset some clues.

Too right. The race is now on to get a working party together to restore the plank in its original position. Lets hope they get to it before a vandal or collector. Or before it floats away...

Did it fall, or was it pushed?? I visited the area on Saturday and I cannot see how it has fallen over of it's own accord. It is a chunky block of wood which has stood without problem for decades. Although its heavily decayed and in desperate need of replacing - I'm not sure who is responsible for doing that.

Does anyone have any idea who owns part of the moor?

I'd be surprised if anyone had any "responsibility" for replacing it. And should it be replaced anyway? It might have been there for a long time, but it was not there for a lot longer before then (if you see what I mean). The fact that it is marked on the map - and its absence could therefore cause some confusion to unwary walkers for a few years until the next revision - might be an argument for replacing it, but such changes to the landscape happen all the time. Or does it deserve the same status as the Boundary Stones which the DPA, DNPA and others restore from time to time?

The hole only seemed to be about a foot or so deep when I saw it and the post looks very rotten now. Maybe a cow or pony pushed it over, I have seen them use those electricity pylons up on Walkhampton common as scratchpost, maybe that's what happened here.

The sleeper is now upright again. Looks pretty solid now...
