Route to Fur Tor

Hi all

We (the two of us) are planning our first visit to Fur Tor in a couple of weeks for our 500 badges. We have a stamp, "Fur Tor - Queen of the Moor" made up, ready to be placed there (as the 'official' one appears to be missing). We have been to Cranmere, and Duck's Pool in December.

Does anyone have any advice / tips for the trek to Fur Tor, and suggestions for routes for ourselves and others who have not yet visited?

We are familiar with this site's advice regarding safety on the Moor, and would also like to leave our route with someone before we head off.

Thanks!

Everybody has their own way of getting to Fur tor, personally I go in from Postbridge, up Drift Lane, over Broadun to just above Sandy Hole Pass and then head up the North West Passage to Cut Hill and then across the ridge to Fur Tor. Its about 5 miles each way but a nice walk on a fine day, just don't get too distracted by all the boxes on Cut Hill!

Hi Mr & Mrs

Last time I went to Cranmere Pool, I left from Princetown and reached the pool via Cut Hill and Fur Tor. I do NOT recommend starting from Princetown that's for sure. Think I'll try Hunter of Gold's route next time.

Thanks

We were thinking of going via Hunter's route. Should we keep close to the banks of the East Dart to assist us? What's the ground like?

We remember a lot of boghopping to Cranmere but found a sheep trek for the better part of the return journey to Ockerton Court. Made such a difference.

What's the water like at Fur Tor / Cut Hill area? Thought we would spend the night up there and have a good forage around Cut Hill

Thanks!

Depending on the weather and the visibility, but if its ok there is no need to hug the river, it can get boggy up on the top of Broadun but considering all the dry weather it shouldn't be a problem. There are some decent campsites in Cut Combe but again because ofthe dry weather can't guarantee the amount of water flowing or its clarity.

If you are West of the moor a good way is to park at Bagga tor, then follow the Black lane which runs round the bottom of Lynch tor, this can be followed pretty much all the way to the head of Eastern Red lake, follow redlake downstream to the Tavy, head upstream to Fur tor brook & follow the brook up towards the tor.

A relatively level route in comparisson to the hike over broadun, and you don't have the distraction of Cut hill on the way!

Thanks Peter

We heard of this route last weekend by a couple who went via your route.
Cut Hill is a place we would like to visit though...It may all depend on the weather - whether we make it a one or a two day trip. Is there still a special stamp for Fuge's Post? - We think we have the correct GR for it.

Don't touch the ordinance that may be laying around a lot is live!

Yes, we often hear about not picking up ordinance. Thinking about it, it is a little worrying when one thinks about not looking for what is about to be trodden on! :o

Hi all

Thanks for all your advice. We finally made our big trek to Fur Tor! Such a beautiful sight to see the main stack emerge against a bright blue sky as we climbed the final slope!

As we are townies and not that experienced walking that far into the Moor, we decided to walk the shorter route via Bagga Tor. A big sense of achievement for us, and we arrived back safely. Plus we also got our 500 badges :D

Got two stamps at Fuge's Post and 3 in Black Lane.

THE FUR TOR STAMP IS IN THE BOX! Or it was on Thursday.

We also placed two stamps on Fur Tor. Clues will be in next update but if any forum members would like them before, please send us a pm.

Alas, we did not have time to go to Cut Hill. However, on our way back met a couple of very experienced boxers - who also walked from Bagga Tor. They had been to Fur Tor and Cut Hill and came back with 30 stamps!! Many from Cut Hill. From what we understand, they also had WOM clues.

When we next go to Fur Tor and Cut Hill we will give ourselves much more time to poke about. We now know of a massive unreg Fur Tor stamp that we had walked right past!

I haven't been to Fur Tor for years, I do intend on venturing out to Cut Hill though within the next couple of months (work pending). It's been five years since I went there and I can only imagine the amount of new stamps out there!

Who actually goes out to Vur tor (yeah the correct spelling) on New year?

Mosy peeps I know go to Fur Tor (the one on the south moor)

So I am curious to find out who goes where...

I think the problem is Nik that we all have busy lives so we tend to go to the nearest areas to where we live, just so we can get our little fix on the moors.
I do want to venture to further areas but it's always down to the time it takes to travel there on my one and only day off work. Mind you I have a new partner that isn't used to walking long distances so that limits the areas to visit. She loves it up there though and that's all that matters to me.

I will be taking her to places like Duck's Pool before the weather turns over the next few months, just to get her little legs working! :D

Fur tor (South Moor) from the Princetown/Yelverton Road is only a 30 minute walk - I am inclined to agree with you the Fur tor everyone refers to is a tadge too far

Some years ago, you used to be able to get special cloth badges if you could prove you'd found Cranmere, Ducks Pool and the Queen of Fur Tor stamps. Does anyone know whether it is still possible to get these, as I found Ducks Pool a couple of years ago, and would love a badge.

Thanks

I got all three of these from Godfrey Swinscow a few years ago by post. It might be worth e-mailing Tony Moore first though through the letterboxing website http://www.userfriendly-devon.com/100club/index.html
You will need to provide proof of your visits to these places.

I contacted Tony Moore and Sylvia passed me on to a lovely lady also called Sylvia who makes badges for Ducks Pool, Cranmere, Fur Tor (Queen of the Moors) and also special personal badges for 6,000 or more letterboxes.

Thanks for your help - my Ducks Pool badge is being made as we speak.

Take care

Tina

special personal badges for 6,000 or more
Sounds interesting - cos some years ago I had a conversation with Godfrey about the badges stopping at 5000, and he told me that the badges stopped at 5000 for a reason and that was to deter more stamps being put out on the moor - though the letterboxing craze peaked in the 1990's and started to drop off after the Newtakes around Dartmoor had their stamps removed.

I wonder if anyone would ever create a 10,000 stamp badge - I know of a couple of "one offs" that have been created - in a way I hope not - but I know it will happen. The it will be a long long hike  to the next badge.

Hoping you can help.

Is the Fur Tor Queen of the Moor stamp quite obvious when you find it - likes Ducks Pool and Cranmere? I'd really like to find it, but would hate to go all the way to Fur Tor and then find the wrong stamp. Does this make sense? The reason I want to find the correct stamp (although will obviously find as many of the others that I can) is so I can also get the cloth badge to show I've been there.

Any pointers would be very gratefully received.

Off for an early night now so that I can be fresh to battle the snow tomorrow - off to do the Chicks Walk around Barn Hill.

Hi Mr Cock & Mrs Chicken - I think i've seen your stamp in some of the boxes i've visited.

Can you or someone else out there possibly pm me the clues to find the Fur Tor - Queen of the Moor stamp, as I'm hoping to visit either next weekend or the weekend after (depending on weather and firing times) and would really love to find this stamp.

Many thanks

I've had to put this walk on hold for a while as woke up yesterday to a gammy leg - don't know what i've done but got some very strong painkillers. Such as shame, as I had it all planned out and today is absolutely glorious. I'll just have to hope it repairs itself over the next few days so can get out next week instead.

I managed to get back to Fur Tor today and found the official box. Much easier to find the main stack when you are not faced with thick fog. The stamp was in a bit of a sorry state though and unfortunately someone had pinched the visitor's book. I had a great day though.
