Crockern Tor

Had a couple of hours spare today so we had a walk up to Crockern Tor/Littaford Tors/Wistmans Wood and Longaford Tor. We hadn't been into that area before and we were expecting quite a good haul of boxes. Unfortunately we returned with just the one. We can't find our catalogue at the moment so we're not sure if it was just us being blind of wether the area is unpopular for some reason.

Was a great few hours though, we were expecting it to be very cold up there and had 'layered up' in preparation. After 20 minutes of walking we were both down to t-shirts. It was lovely and warm, not a cloud in the sky - a great day to be up on the Moor.

I was up around Crockern Tor a few weeks ago, and while I only found one around the Tor there were a further four in the 'valley' over the back of the tor.

I have been in the Wistman's Wood area many times Boo. It is one of my favourite places.
Unfortunately, it never seems to have boxes in abundance. I have found a total of about 30 in the area (all visits together that is). It maybe because the area is surrounded by private lands (?)

I'd wondered if it had anything to with it's proximity to the firing range?

A few years ago letterboxers were asked by the DNP not to put boxes in the newtake around Wistmans Wood. A few boxes appear in that area from time to time. There are plenty in the Crockern Tor area and if you wish to walk a little further try Crow Tor.

Crow Tor is one of my favourite spots. It seems so far from everything else. Try and visit Beardown Man if you can too. It is awesome and still amazes me, even now just thinking about it. Very mysterious !!

couple of years ago???? That area used to be one of my favourite areas for boxing where you could find upwards of 50 boxes, but as mentioned in a previous post the area was designated as a Newtake area and the boxing fraternity were asked not to site any more boxes, it also coincided with the 5 year listing for the catalogue, so it was decided that boxes could remain for the five years and then be removed... sadly most of them vanished over night...

My belief is that, you have to walk a long long way before you can find a box, so many boxers dont bother siting their boxes out there anymore - nuts to the good exercise - I cant be bothered to walk that far!

we walked this tor earlier this year fantastic walk... we were reading the stories on hunter of golds website, which is well worth a read. the kids kept hearing the hounds when we were near the woods. i think we only found 1 box as well, but we did find about 6 smashed boxes one of them was an old ammo box :(

Fortunately i'm not working too much between Christmas and New Year so may get a day or 2 up on the Moor.

Not yet, i'm suffering from that dreaded Christmas problem of being ill. I've got a pretty good imune system so i'm fighting it off quite well, I just feel a bit cold all the time and so tense up causing lower back and knees etc to hurt.

The Moor isn't the best place for me at the moment.
