Tries again... if I dont crash again that is...
As a rule of thumb when hiking across the moors you can reasonably work out your speed if you assume you can walk 1 kilometer an hour (15 mins per kilometer) plus 2 minutes added time per kilometer for every contour you climb up so if you your walk for example is 2 kilometers then it is 30 minutes walking time and if you are going to go up 50 meters then another 10 minutes is going to be added to your time making a total of 40 minutes for the two kilometers.
However you can also add another 2 minutes per person per stamp you come across. And then there is the "hunting time" which if you are determined can be as much as thirty minutes per box.
They do say allow ten minutes resting time per hour, but when boxing you will be doing that at every box anyway, so that can be discarded for now
I for one have been out all day on a couple of occasions and only found one box, and other occasions been out for a morning and found 50+ so it comes in swwings and roundabouts.
What you will need to do is to work out where you are and what direction you will need to go in to get off the moor if you have to in a hurry (injury/weather/or for some unforeseen circumstance).
Also let someone at home know what area you are planning on going to on the moor aand roughly what time you are getting back - and when you do get back let them know you are back... all too often the Rescue groups have been called out because the trekker hasn't told the "safety number" that they have returned.
IT doesn't matter where you are going - be it Pew Tor or Cut Hill let some one know
Respect the moor - it can be a dangerous place if it isn't respected.
Another tip I can give you is to look after your feet - take spare socks with you, in case they get wet... if your feet get sore tend to them - and a good tip I was given is to swap your socks over left for the right etc...
And try not to exhaust yourself as you will have a long drive at the end of the days walking.
Remember another minor detail - you can only go as fast as the slowest person in your group.
Not only does heat cause dehydration, so does the cold weather, so drink lots of fluids (dont be afraid to pee behind a rock or a bush everyone does it)
I hope this isn't putting you off
Above all have fun
