Hiya everyone

Just wondering if you would be able to give me some advise as to where are the best places to look to try and get your first 100 letterboxes?

any help would be greatly appreciated as we are up on the moors again this weekend and would love to log a nice number of letterboxes up :)

Hi Kera
If you park at Barnhill and then go over Feather tor and Heckwood tor then I guess you should easily turn up about 20.

Then carry on down as far as Sampford Tor then you could reach 40

Then on another day go around Yar tor over the road and you should find another 20 or so then Bonehill Rocks

When you are more experienced you could go out to Cut Hill where there is alleged to be over a thousand of them - but when I went many years agop I only got 90, cos they are hard to find

But anyway - welcome to the site - it is nice to see fresh mea... I mean bloo... no - faces - ah thats it!........ fresh faces in here, it's nice to see fresh faces in here

Hi, it's nice to meet you :)
Try Pew Tor and the surrounding area. There used to be a lot around Vixen Tor but not since Mary Alford decided that she owned the Moor and I strongly suspect that she removes anything put out in that area.

That's good news, a lot of boxes disappeared in that area 3 or 4 years back.

Hi Kera,

As the others suggested, Pew Tor and Feather Tor have always got a lot of boxes nearby, as has Little Staple Tor. We've had success at Top Tor (parking by Hemsworthy Gate) in recent years too.

Jasper and I wish you lots of luck in your quest for your first hundred and hope you have lots of fun finding them all!

Yes, there's loads around Pew Tor and Sampford Tor - you almost trip over some of them.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

Another good spot is Over tor and Church rock - went out for about 10 minutes there yesterday and got 6 without even really looking.

Anyway - collecting stamps isn't a race - it is a hobby if it takes you 1 year to collect thousand or ten years it really doesnt matter does it?

So far it has taken me 17 years to get to nearly 5000 - but I will get there one day - and I shall wear the badge with pride!

Welcme to the site! There are many places on the moors that is within easy access from a car park. Kings tor, parking at Four Winds Car Park near Princetown is another one.

have fun searching!

Hard to find is the understatement of the century - I went out to Fur Tor and Cut Hill today. Unfortunately, when I got to Fur Tor, the mist came right down, I couldn't get any bearings, and didn't find a single box, so I decided to go over to Cut Hill but couldn't find a thing.

Only managed one box today - about five minutes walk from the car ... lol. However, message to self, do not wear new leather walking boots and expect to walk for in excess of 8 hours and think you won't get blisters. Ripped my feet to shreds - so stupid. I didn't have that problem with my old boots, which were cloth. Just got wet feet all the time. I'll see how I get on with the leather ones over the next few weeks and if really don't get on with them, will need to get some replacement cloth ones, which are so soft, and put up with wet feet.

The birds are already nesting, so probably best if people don't go out to Cut Hill/Fur Tor area now until the season has finished. I'll try again in the summer.

Hope everyone is well today.

Oh, bad luck Tina. I hope your feet get better soon. Someone one day will make a fortune selling "ready to walk in" walking boots!

I always find those expensive 'gel' plasters very good for 'Dartmoored out' feet!

Better luck next time!

Very Valid point - if you get new boots made of leather - apply a lot of Dubbin - not only does this waterproof them - it also softens them - another thing to do is to wear them damp until they dry off so they shape to your feet - but do it in small doses getting longer with each time.

Also two pairs of WOOL socks or Wool and cotton - and NO MAN MADE FIBRES

Hope you get your feet back into order soon

And now to make you feel a little annoyed - on cut hill you need an old golf club so you can prod - I found three - one on top of the other in the same hole!
