Where has the green gone?

Only a few weeks ago Dartmoor was saturated after a month of rain and everything was green, green, green. I did a charity walk around Princetown during the week and from the Hessary TV mast all you could see for miles around was fawn, fawn, fawn!

ps While up there, I stumbled across a 'Dartmoor Quarries' stamp. I assume it is part of a set. Does anyone know if it is?

Hi, I also went up to North Hessary Tor a couple of weeks ago to complete two charity walks up there. Yep, it's bone dry up there and barely a blade of green grass in site. We saw a couple of fires near Princetown on the same day, don't think they were controlled though.

Don't know about the quarry stamp you found though, sorry.

Swaling was banned by this present government - god knows why...

Swaling incidently is controlled burning of the moor to burn back the gorse.

So fires are probably caused by idiots setting fire to the place. :(

Swaling still goes on in parts of Dartmoor - it was in the news a few weeks back. However, I don't think it is large scale.

There are huge burned areas in the middle of the Moor around Fur Tor at the moment, I estimate that around 2/3 of the land you can see from the top of the tor on the south side have been burned. Possible a case of being out of sight of the interfering government busybodies?

A couple of years back I was out on the moors somewhere around a huge area of burned out gorse - numerous boxes had been destroyed - and I found what had caused the fire... a firework with a slow burning fuse so the arsonist - cos that is what they are - could get well away before the fire was ignited, a bannedword wasn't reliable enough to spark a blaze.
How did I know it was a slow burning pyrotechnic... I asked someone!
