Hi Paul, it getting very dry up there now, plus now the weather is getting better (20 degrees today in Torquay), it's much more prone to sparking up. All it takes is some careless person dropping a glass bottle in the gorse.

Between Plympton and Lee Moor, just over the cattle grid and before the turning to Portworthy.

I mentioned on another thread how dry the moor has got in the past few weeks. Hot & sunny weather with a bit of wind thrown in for good measure is lethal.

For some peculiar reason - someone out there has this tendency to go around deliberately setting fire to the place at this time of year.

It destroys (well cuts them back) the Gorse bushes (not a bad thing)
the grass takes a few weeks to recover - which isn't a bad thing once again cos it burns off the mat of dried grass that is there.
It leaves a horrible layer of carbon everywhere - not a good thing -
it kills a lot of the nesting birds - definitely not a good thing
Get rid of a lot of letterboxes as it melts the boxes :-(

But the person who is lighting the fires is sick in the head - if I ever found him.............................

It would be far better if swaling was carried out in a controlled fashion as it used to be, at least then there isn't the danger of huge, uncontrolled fires. There are vast areas that are covered in large amounts of very dry grass that would go up like tinder if someone dropped a bannedword or lit a fire deliberately.
