Slow and Steady

I think that I picked up the clues for this series on this forum does anybody know about who put them out? All I have is a name of Jo Letts dated 14.7.06 I have just been informed that they are all missing. If anyone has any info on this series please can you let me know as I passed the clues onto a pair of creditable letterboxers they have come home tonight after looking for them and wasting 3 hours searching. As you may imagine they are slightly annoyed and have contacted me. These are not my boxes, they knew that but it looks bad on me when clues are circulating and the boxes are missing. Any help on this matter greatly appreciated and I appeal to Jo Letts to get in contact with me. Thanks :D

I collected the whole series, in two attempts as I couldn't find one of them, last year. They are high quality stamps.

I find it a bit odd though that someone is getting irate when a set that were placed on the moor last summer are no longer there............ in April of the following year!

Jo - Bunnymummy - has disappeared :( and I look forward to her return
I don't know if these were her clues - but there is a Dartmoor Letterbox thief out there (I suspect four or five letterbox thieves tbh) - if they are still in the catalogue then report the matter to Sylvia who will update the clues accordingly - list them as missing
not having looked as to where they were sited I cant be of anymore help atm

Thanks for that people, I did feel a bit annoyed as I was only doing a favour by passing on these clues. I am not going to name names as to who this person is that is complaining but some people take this a bit seriously and to me come across as a bit arogant. At the end of the day Letterboxing is fun and a good hobby to have its not a mater of life and death as some people may think!!! Oh well you live and you learn I guess. :D

Bad luck, Slow and Steady - I'm sorry you got your ear bent by people who should be thanking you for passing on free clues to them. It isn't your fault that the walk was taken in or that some random nutjob half-inched the boxes.

Did your 'friends' try and find ALL the boxes?! I'd have given up if I'd found that the entire first half of the list had gone! There's a fine line between hobby/pastime and obsession and it sounds like your friends have leapt over it!

It was good of you to have shared your clues with these ingrates.

Thanks for your kind words Roo. You have made me feel a lot better. I will certainly be careful who I pass if any clues onto in the future. I know know that the series belongs to Bunnymummy (Jo Letts) this morning I tried to E-mail her and the E-mail got rejected....dont know what is wrong I hope nothing bad. Thanks again Roo xxx

OOOHHHH sorry, they went up yesterday and spent 3 hrs looking I agree with you Roo I would have given up after I had found that the first 2 were missing. These set has been out for about 10 months. With the letterbox thief about I would have checked with someone that the boxes were still out before I even left the house.

I agree with the others, don't take it personally and in future, let them get their own clues, using the catalogue and charity walks, like everyone else. As you say, it is supposed to be fun.

I went on a charity walk a few weeks ago which had been taken in early. It was frustrating but I just enjoyed the lovely scenery and beautiful day. After all, isn't letterboxing a good way of getting to see parts of Dartmoor you wouldn't necessarily visit otherwise? Good fresh air, exercise and absolutely breath taking views. Getting the letterboxes as an added bonus (or it is for me anyway because I'm so useless at getting the clues ... lol).

Actually that brings up a point. Very few of the charity clue sheets even give an issue date and even fewer give any idea of when they boxes will be taken in. I try to remember to write on them when I receive them but it's always guesswork as to how long after issue it's worth trying to find the boxes.

Aww, thanks Slow & Steady, I'm glad I was able to help a bit. :)

Fulchet/Tina makes a very good point. I am always happy just to be on Dartmoor and, if a walk has been vandalised, the sights, sounds and smells of the moor are perfectly adequate compensation.

The year before last, Jasper and I had ventured out to do a charity walk but, once there, other letterboxers told us that all the stamps had been stolen. After a moment's outbust of irritation, we exchanged philosophical sighs and smiles and went our separate ways. Jasper and I instead went and searched for an ancient stone cross that was marked on the map - we had a really lovely walk and a nice drink in a local pub. Now, wouldn't you think that that was a much better way of dealing with the disappointment than tearing a strip off someone? Why give vandals the satisfaction of ruining your entire day?

And, "Slow & Steady" - Jasper is TERRIFIED by your malevolent-looking kitty friend. He will not be sleeping easily tonight...

Well when I chose the picture it reminded me of my cat Simba he was cute but you did have to fear him also!!! Unfortunetly he is looking down from the cattery in the sky (I rescued him from Spain) might explain why he was psycho . Needless to say I have two little angels from the cats protection league now so Roo and Jasper you sont need to worry!!!

Charity Walks and missing boxes are a common thing. Many times I have bought the clues and found the occassional empty site. Yes, it's a little annoying but I then think about my surroundings. All I am on the moors is just a little dot on many miles of beautiful landscape, just like that little ant in the middle of your back garden (if you have one, garden that is!).
Any problems I felt I have in my life just simply vanish, well until I get off the moors anyway. :( Just take a deep breath and fill your lungs with that lovely fresh air, plus bugs, pollen etc, etc........

So when some people get so involved with our love of letterboxing, they tend to not notice the beauty that surrounds them. This is why we all have to remember that when we say "No, not another empty site!", there's always another box nearby..........................somewhere. :)

Wise words, Dizzy. I'm always glad as well that, even if some or all of the walk has been pinched, I've been able to make a small donation to a worthy cause in buying the clues.

S&S - Jasper is a little soothed by your words. But TWO cattie-angels in your home? You are a brave soul indeed...

I was just wondering - has anyone here ever spotted anyone in the act of vandalising a box? If so, did they say anything to the culprit?

If doing a charity walk, always assume the walk will be in before the next "Meet" and then assume that the walk will start losing boxes from the day the clues are released (which is a bit sad) but that is the way the walks are going these days because of the Letterbox thief

I am convinced that the letterbox thief actually attends the meet with accomplices and purchases a few of the walks so he/she can knobble the walk. It is sad these days that the benefit of a few charities has to be spoilt by such a few mindless morons.

I do, and I try to remember to write on the clue sheet the date it was issued, but it would be much easier if walk organisers put the dates on their own sheets. Every so often I forget to put a date on the sheet and then find a mysterious set of clues on my bookshelf with no indication as to whether there is any chance that the boxes will still be out.

I thought all walk organisers HAD to put the dated the walk is being officially taken in on their clue sheets - or is it just me that's been taken in?

If in doubt - so long as there is a phone number or e-mail address then you could always contact them to find out. Sometimes it pays to do the same if a walk nas been out for a few months because then you are aware of any problems with it as well.

All the walks i've bought over recent months have had the start and finish dates on them, so haven't had any problems.

A couple of the walks I bought in the winter, because I bought them so late, also advised of any problems and provided copies of stamps that were missing.

Setting out a walk is a torrid affair these days - while a couple of years ago people used to put out a walk taking their bearings and then publishing the clues all for a quid!

Now... you have to ask the DPA if you can - in what area - get permission - get a list of potential sites - get permission - site the boxes and get someone to check the site - then you can publish your clues - so it aint easy as it was anymore.
Though you can possibly get away with a one day walk as long as the boxes are removed on that day!
Seems legislation has taken a lot of the fun out of it!
:(
Then the price has escalated - which to me puts me off - shame really!
I am happy to donate the price to a charity than bother to go out and look for them - and quite often some of the quality of the stamps is pretty poor whereas others are excellent!
