Waterlogged boxes - and a weather prediction

I know with all this unending rain we have been having there are going to be an awful lot of sodden boxes out there.
Some owners out there are going to be oblivious that their box is going to be waterlogged,
Remember, fellow boxers, if no one passes this info on to Sylvia/Paul and Steph then the box will not get sorted.
If you can find out who it belongs to even better, try to phone the owner and sort it from there.
Sadly I know a lot of boxes out there end up in this condition because previous boxers fail to put the lid on properly or the box is damaged.

I actually found out why we are having all this rain the other day - something to do with the jet stream being far too far south, and all the low pressure systems being equally too far south.... so my prediction for winter is going be COLD and a lot of snow!

Hi Nik, yep it's been terrible weather and still is, mind you the sun is out down here in Torbay today! I ventured up onto the moors last Wednesday and decided that the weather was far to evil to even get out of the car! Couldn't see for more than 30 feet, very high winds with a driving rain, not to nice! So I ended up going into Princetown for a coffee then visit the Information Centre.
Oh well, at least I got up there again. :(

I had an e-mail the other day about one of my boxes being damaged, Dizzy Series - Siesta Time. This is sighted near the left hand cairn on Black Hill, near Haytor. So if anyone get there before me it will need taking off the moors, I will replace it a.s.a.p. Apparently the lid was left off! Book soaked and stamp now off backing.

Cheers
Dizzy

I do wish people would take more trouble when replacing the boxes - a couple seconds more to fit the lid properly would stop an awful lot of boxes getting damaged.

I haven't been out in about six weeks - partly due to the weather and because in the middle of band season - lots of gigs.

I'm hoping to get out towards end of August and will especially meet some of you for the walk to Cranmere Pool.

Take care everyone.

Oooooh tell me about it - I managed to get an invite to see Greg Allman the other day -off to see the Scorpions and Michael Schenker Group on Monday... also seeing what else is around these days!

But the weather prediction for next week is far better weather - we shall see

James and Jenny are planning to walk to Cranmere Pool from Belstone village, via Oke Tor and Okerton Court Pool On Sunday 26th August.

They estimate it is about 12 miles round trip, and the route planned is hopefully not too hilly/boggy. They've never been to Cranmere Pool before, and thought that it was time that they did!

They are planning on leaving Belstone by 9am to allow plenty of time for the round trip, as they don't want to rush and gather that Cranmere Pool itself can be tricky to find. Their aim is to get to Cranmere Pool without too many diversions for letterboxes on the way, but obviously get as many letterboxes as possible on the way back if time allows.

They are thinking of meeting up sometime before then, maybe for a pub drink somewhere on Dartmoor when we can meet and discuss plans beforehand?

And, from what I gather, we're all welcome.

Hi Tina

Thanks for that excellent summary! Work's been very busy lately so have not had chance to visit the forum so often, nor (more importantly!) get down to Dartmoor.

The walk's still planned. We'll sort out the route in detail, but as you say, out via Oke Tor and Okerton Court Pool, and back via Hangingstone Hill. This makes a small 'loop' at the end rather than just being just 'out and back again' if that's okay?

We'll be in contact with you and Crafty Jo soon, and let you have our contact details etc.

If it's not possible to meet up before hand, please just be 'self-sufficient' with food, waterproofs etc and if you can, those all important letterbox clues!

Best wishes

James

Looking forward to the walk - will ensure I am sorted with food, clues and clothes! It will be a good chance for me to try out my new compass! I had reasonable success on Tuesday night - well I found 3 empty sites!! See you at Belstone in a couple of weeks. :D

For variety try coming back over Cosdon Hill isntead of over Belstone or along the valley.

Thanks for the suggestion Pat. We'll give it some thought. We could always see how we are all feeling after reaching Cranmere Pool, and decide upon the return route then. :)

I've never had any great difficulty in finding Cranmere from that direction either. Walk past Ockerton Court and carry on until the path drops down over the hill. Turn left and follow pretty much along the edge of the peat until you come up to the head of the valley and Cranmere is a little way over to the right - there are usually some fairly clear tracks because of the number of people who go there.

The section from Cranmere to Hangingstone is liable to be pretty wet at the moment but I've never found it impassable.

I shan't be able to join you I'm afraid, I'm off to an annual gathering of friends for the weekend, eating unhealthy food, drinking too much beer, riding bikes around a field, talking a load of rubbish around the bonfire and generally having a very silly time.

Thanks for that useful info, Pat! :D

Hope you enjoy your weekend!
