Travellers

Are there any specific guidelines on whether 'Travellers' are counted towards the 100 Club badges? I met some people at the weekend who had 2 large boxes full of registered travellers. I'm personally thinking I probably won't count them towards my badges as I didn't actually 'find' them in the traditional way. I suppose the same question holds true for Pub boxes, Hitchhikers etc. Any thoughts or specific information would be appreciated. Thanks. :D

We collected 5 travellers of someone in May that are registered.

If I remember rightly there is a separate catalogue for these, check the front of the main catalogue

Edited bit

Yes Travellers can be registered, the best thing to do ask ask the owner is it registered

Hi Jo, no I don't count them as I hadn't physically gone out there with compass in hand to find them, I do keep these as a seperate collection.

I think it's down to the individual on what you do with them, but I don't think it's right adding them to your collection to those that you sweated, scratched your arms & legs, racked your brain and spend time finding.

They are registered boxes and they can count - sadly these days because of one person a few years back went around the meet - started at zero and finished with just over 500 registered stamps was eligible for his 100, 200 and 500 badges - this was when I heard Tony say - They all count - including WOM boxes.
But having said that and as a purist, I personally wouldn't count them towards my 100, but would perhaps count them towards the 200 or 500 badges. I do have in my collection over 1000 stamps I dont count towards any target - either they are crap (unidentifiable) or I got them in someones house!
It all boils down to your honesty or not - they all count
Years ago when I got my 2000 badge - I was going past Godfreys house at the time and decided to pay a social call (he has a beatiful house!) I was actually 3 short of my target of 2000 but persuaded him to let me have the 2000 badge which I wouldn't put onto my back pack or jacket until I had reached that figure, my reason I gave - I would be cheating myself if I did - and I kept to my word - I waited until I reached the 2000 landmark.

Uummm. Slight differences of opinion even on here.

I've sort of decided to keep the travellers separate - and perhaps I'll get a Travellers catalogue some time and tick them off. I shan't count them towards any of my 100 club badges - these badges can then represent the 'hard earned' boxes I have found with grit, determination and the odd bucket load of luck!

I shall however continue to count WOM boxes - half the time I don't know whether they are WOM boxes or not. Though I am slowly beginning to build up a collection of clues. These boxes you do after all find in the usual way with compass and clues.

Thanks for your help and any other opinions would be greatly appreciated. :)

I know it's a silly question, but.........................

What exactly are 'travellers'? Are they the same as our own 'personal' stamps that we carry around to stamp in boxes when we find them, or are they something different?

Am I right in thinking that 'moving' boxes/stamps are different still, in that the stamp stays in a box until someone moves it to a different one?

Many thanks

No the travellers are different than personal stamps which are not registered and no one seams to want a copy of personal stamps for some reason. I would.

Travelers are carried around the moor by there owner, if you get into conversation with another boxer, (if you can catch one, they seem to scurry off when they see us) you can ask them if they have any.

The question is why do we have travellers?

And then there is moving boxes......which can be found with a registered box, (they should have moving box on them), you basically take it with you and put it in the next box you find, which may be anything from the next box, to a couple of days later depending when you find it . We moved one to the other side of the moor two days later as we found one at the last box of the day

Thanks Number 70! :D

In that case, we have yet to find a traveller or a moving box! Maybe next time!

James

PS: We would be happy to have a copy of 'personal' stamps also. Looking through the notebooks found in boxes, some people have great personal stamps. Also they are very difficult to find as they are constantly on the move, with no clues to their location!

You may be lucky and stumble across a couple on August 26th!

I don't count travellers towards my badge totals. I count WOM boxes and unregistered boxes that I find on teh Moor on the grounds that they are real letterboxes and I had to make the effort to find them. I count pub or other building boxes if - and only if - I visited the establishment as part of a walk. For example I've counted Willy's ice cream van because I've passed it whilst on a walk on several occasions, and I've counted several of the pubs on the Moor, but I don't count shops etc in Tavistock and I generally don't bother to collect those anyway.

I think travellers are good as you get to meet other boxers on the moor and have a chat, hopefully they will point you in the right direction or help you look for the box you have spent a hour looking for.

Just had one made, just have to get it registered, but will bring it to the meet as im sending it off today. ButI also think when jenny and james helped us out on our 100 stamp I think it was good it was there traveller we counted towards our 100.

I set a moving box out on the moor many years ago - It was called I wandered lonely as a cloud - never seen it since

I think this debate sums up the strengths of the letterboxing community; the wonderful thing about it is that it is really up to you to decide how rigorous you are going to be about claiming the boxes you find. The 100 club are really not prescriptive, nor are they too fussed about the burden of proof. So some of us (count me in) are relative puritans, whilst others are happy to claim any old thing. So every one can be happy, and it's only between yourself and your conscience as to how hard you are by your own standards. So everybody can play: Great stuff!

it is a shame you can not get a travellers badge for collecting over 50 as i think it would take forever getting 100 travellers then they could only be counted towards that badge not the letterboxing badge.
