What do you prefer? None of these are real clues!
1. No clue, but easy to find.
2. Easy bearings.
i.e. 575? 765? Hound Tor 330°, Haytor, 110°, Nearby Tree, 20°. Under 2'x2' rock.
3. Hard bearings.
i.e. 57?? 76?? Tree 30°, Another tree 160°, Haytor Stack 110° Under heather.
4. Cryptic.
i.e. 57?? 76?? John Cleese would like this box. Under small rock.
5. Impossible.
i.e. 5??? 6??? Next to small leat.

I would definately choose the 'Easy Bearings'! I'm am completely hopeless with criptic clues, whereas using a sighting compass (Sylva Landranger Type 54) is my prefered choice, with the occassional GPS.
Unless the clues are straight forward to follow I won't bother with the box in question. There's nothing worse than spending half an hour looking for a box and either finding an empty site or not finding it at all.

I'm with Dizzy on this one.

The ones I really hate are those which give bearings to features many miles away and nothing at all close by. The really good ones for me are those which require a bit of thought to get you to the general area but with a final clue which becomes clear once you are close to the box.

I completely agree with you there Cranmere.
Nothing worse than trying to line up Brentor in poor visibility.
However, I do like some of the cryptic clues. I get a great sense of satisfaction from finding a box with a tricky (for me) clue.

Wimps....
I like to try to work out the cryptic clues - this goes back to the days when I used to help Dennis the Menace produce his cryptic clue catalogue

We did enjoy solving the Signposts on Dartmoor series and then trying to work out where they where on the map and how to get round them on the narrow roads.

I still find myself wishing that everyone who sights boxes has a proper sighting compass!! I was up at Over Tor the other day and some of the bearings were shocking!!!
