diary of a novice stamp cutter pt 2

NUMBER 70

I have all the materials and tools and I am raring to go....

I have now got my image having traced around a photo of the subject electronically and getting the required detail, scaled it down to the final size of the stamp,

Bought some carving tools from a local craft shop and experimented on one of my spare rubbers to create a 70 stamp. Realised you can't watch snooker and carve! (wheres the plasters)

The next problem is to get the real image onto the stamp, I have read various posts on the forum how to do this, but I have got another one.

I realised my printer is an ink jet printer, which after printing black images will smear when wet because the ink is still wet. So I printed off the image ran into the kitchen put the image face up on the dry work top, placed the rubber over the image and used a rolling pin to gently roll over the back of the rubber and hopefully transfer the damp image. I noticed the rubber squashing and deforming slightly so I turned the rubber over and hey presto theres my image clear enough to draw around.

All I have to do now is go around and darken the lines up and I should be ready for the next step....carving

Next week! the first cut

tip.... try not to do vertical cuts - try to angle them away from the line you are cutting.... I found using two different blades to be beneficial

The classic rounded blade for the donkey work and the pointed one for the detail

If you do it with the pointed one all the time you end up in a tizz cos you cant clear all the debris

Another useful thing to use for clearing open areas is a modellers chisel if you have one...

But then you might have bettr success than I did - and I hope you do

Intend to put the box out if I finish it and put the clue on here on our return. will let you know more when we return

Discovered another way to remove rubber from the stamp but I have not fully tried it yet so I will again let you know as it involves moving machinery!

If it's anything like my first the delay is injury related; you simply can't type with all those plasters on your fingers! :D

Did enjoy cutting the stamp but do not think I will be doing it again, the novelties wore off, fingers are all intact.

Hey, nice bit of cutting going on there, well done! I know how tricky the round areas can be to get it just right. It's always best to take away to little than to much with a cut.

Thanks, in the process of producing the Runnage Bridge text for the title as the bonus box, plus a few for the meet

Can you add you own boxes to the list of the boxes you have found or is that cheeting :D

I don't add any boxes I make for myself or the commissioned stamps I produce unless I go out there and find them. To me this is cheating as there's no effort in finding the box.

I suppose you could hide it, forget where it is and then find it again ... lol
